What Is the Department of Audiology?
Audiology is a branch of science concerned primarily with the prevention of hearing and balance disorders, and, once they occur, with their diagnosis and rehabilitation. The primary goal of audiology is to ensure that hearing and balance losses are identified at the earliest possible stage and, when necessary, that appropriate rehabilitative approaches are implemented as soon as possible. Graduates of the program are awarded the title of Audiologist.
Within the scope of their education and expertise, audiologists are professionals who identify hearing and balance disorders, provide appropriate rehabilitation through the fitting of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and assistive listening devices, monitor the rehabilitation process, and, when necessary, carry out rehabilitation, particularly for infants and children, through auditory training approaches.
What Courses Are Offered in the Department of Audiology?
Within the program, students receive professional education through a systematic curriculum organized within a defined logical framework. Throughout the four-year program, the first year focuses primarily on basic medical sciences and introductory professional courses. The objective of the first year is to establish a solid professional foundation for students. In the second year, students receive intensive theoretical and practical training in diagnostic audiology, while the third year focuses on rehabilitative audiology through comprehensive theoretical and practical education. The fourth year is primarily devoted to clinical training, during which students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in audiology clinics throughout the academic year.
We Teach Professional Practice Skills
The Department of Audiology at Üsküdar University aims to educate audiologists who possess professional ethics and autonomy, are knowledgeable and competent in the fields of diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology, are able to take responsibility, have acquired professional practice skills, and have the necessary foundation to practice their profession.
What Are the Career Opportunities for Audiologists?
Graduates of the Department of Audiology are employed in Audiology Clinics of public, private, and university hospitals. In order for cochlear implant surgeries to be performed in hospitals, an audiologist is a mandatory healthcare professional who must work alongside an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT physician). In addition, employment opportunities are available in private special education and rehabilitation centers serving individuals with hearing impairments. In these settings, audiologists are mandatory professionals who work together with teachers of the hearing impaired. In the private sector, they may serve as responsible managers in hearing aid companies and also work for cochlear implant companies that provide services to hospitals. They may also establish their own private audiology centers. Graduates who wish to pursue an academic career may continue their postgraduate education at universities in Türkiye or abroad and pursue careers in academia.
