About Forensic Sciences (English) Department

Designed for individuals who seek to specialize in forensic sciences at international standards and combat transnational crime on a global scale, Üsküdar University’s Bachelor’s Degree Program in Forensic Sciences (English) brings together scientific competence, advanced laboratory practice, and a universal understanding of justice.

What Is Forensic Sciences?

Forensic Sciences is a multidisciplinary field that serves the administration of justice by examining physical evidence obtained during judicial and administrative investigations through contemporary knowledge and technologies, and by identifying crimes and offenders using scientific methods. Today, as crime has assumed a universal and borderless nature, professionals in this field are required to have full command of the English language and international terminology.

Solving all types of crime, particularly global terrorism, international human trafficking, cybercrime, child abuse, organized drug and arms trafficking, international bribery, and counterfeiting networks, depends on the presence of qualified forensic scientists with a global vision. Improving the quality of justice services is possible not only by collecting evidence, but also by analyzing collected data in accordance with international standards, preparing reliable expert reports in which error rates and the margin of error are clearly stated, and scientifically safeguarding the presumption of innocence.

Within this scope, the range of evidence examined is extremely broad:

  • Biological and Chemical Evidence: Blood, urine, semen, bone, hair, tissue, plant and animal remains, narcotic substances and their precursors, and explosive residues.
  • Physical and Trace Evidence: Fingerprints, palm prints, footprints and footwear impressions, firearms and ballistic findings, marks left by cutting and piercing instruments, glass, paint, soil and fiber residues, and fire debris.
  • Digital and Documentary Evidence: Audio, speech and video recordings, cyber data, handwritten and printed documents, counterfeit seals and forged signatures.

Why Study Forensic Sciences in English?

The recognition and accreditation of criminal laboratories, crime scene investigation units, and expert witness institutions in Türkiye and around the world, as well as their transformation into pioneering organizations that export technology, depend on training professionals who use English, the universal language of science, with near-native proficiency.

The Forensic Sciences (English) Program aims to educate students not only in accordance with local legislation and methods, but also in an integrated manner aligned with European and global standards. Combining interdisciplinary thinking with a strong foundation in natural sciences and extensive laboratory practice, our program produces graduates who are competent in problem-solving, analytical thinking, scientific writing, and effective communication before audiences such as international courts and symposiums.

Advanced Technology and On-Site Analysis Vision

The risk of deterioration during the transfer of evidence to laboratories for criminal analysis is one of the greatest challenges facing forensic sciences worldwide. One of the primary objectives of our English-medium program is to train innovative scientists who can follow the “on-site analysis” technologies and equipment being developed in advanced countries, contribute to these technologies through international scientific literature, and lead this process through the software solutions they develop.

Program Content and Academic Approach

Our curriculum primarily consists of natural sciences, including chemistry, biology, and physics, and is supported by skills in applying and developing computer software, international quality assurance standards, and laboratory ethics.

Üsküdar University’s Forensic Sciences (English) Program offers students, researchers, and faculty members an open, creative, and academically stimulating environment integrated with the global community. Our objective is not merely to provide education, but also to become an international leader in forensic sciences education, increase public awareness of science and justice, and educate the future leaders of global forensic sciences.

International Career Opportunities for Our Graduates

With English as the sole language of instruction, our Forensic Sciences graduates gain access to a unique range of global employment opportunities beyond national borders. The learning outcomes of our program are designed to add direct value not only to national law enforcement agencies, but also to global security and legal communities.

International career paths available to our graduates include:

  1. International Security and Law Enforcement Organizations: Specialist positions in investigation, crime prevention, and data analysis departments within INTERPOL, EUROPOL, and the United Nations (UN).
  2. Global Criminal and Forensic Medicine Laboratories: Analyst or managerial positions in private or governmental forensic science laboratories with international accreditation, particularly in Europe and the United States.
  3. Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics: Specialist roles in investigating cybercrime, data recovery, and digital evidence analysis at multinational technology companies, international banks, and consultancy firms.
  4. International Expert Witness Services and Consultancy: Working as a Forensic Consultant in cross-border legal disputes, international arbitration tribunals, or global insurance companies.
  5. Global Academic Careers and Research and Development: Smooth progression into master’s and doctoral programs at leading universities around the world, as well as research positions in the R&D departments of multinational companies developing forensic science technologies such as new DNA analysis kits and crime scene investigation software.

By studying in the Forensic Sciences (English) Department, you will not merely acquire a profession; by using technologies that are ahead of their time, you will become an indispensable source of quality assurance in the establishment of justice on a universal scale.

Forensic Sciences (English) Program Curriculum

In line with practices in developed countries around the world, our goal is to provide an undergraduate education specifically designed for the field of Forensic Sciences to prepare young professionals who will work in public and private forensic laboratories, conduct scientific research, develop innovative methods and technologies, and apply them in practice. Achieving this objective will enable our public and private forensic institutions and crime laboratories to become internationally recognized and trusted organizations that lead the field and export forensic technologies worldwide.

It is a well-known fact that crime scene investigations are not conducted with the same level of quality throughout every region of Türkiye. Moreover, due to the absence of forensic laboratories in many locations, evidence often has to be transported by mail or courier for examination.

The transfer of evidence from one location to another is one of the primary reasons for inconsistencies in laboratory analyses and unreliable results. All evidence—particularly biological evidence—should ideally be analyzed at or very close to the location where it is collected. In fact, developed countries are increasingly adopting portable forensic technologies and equipment that allow evidence to be examined directly at the crime scene without transporting it to a laboratory.

The undergraduate program in Forensic Sciences aims to educate professionals who possess interdisciplinary thinking skills, a strong and reliable scientific foundation, and extensive laboratory experience. Graduates will be equipped to advance forensic expertise, develop innovative products and technologies, and contribute to the future of forensic science.

By educating graduates with strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, a curriculum primarily based on the natural sciences, proficiency in developing and applying computer software, and training in scientific writing, public speaking, laboratory ethics, and quality assurance, the program contributes to improving quality standards across a broad spectrum of forensic disciplines. These include drug analysis, hair, fiber, paint, glass, explosive and fire debris analysis, DNA analysis, firearms examination, fingerprint identification, footwear and tire track analysis, questioned document examination, and crime scene investigation. As a result, quality assurance in these essential areas of justice will be strengthened, further increasing public confidence in the judicial system.

Our objectives are to become an international leader in Forensic Sciences education, educate the future leaders of the profession, enhance academic excellence through a balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service, and increase public awareness of science through forensic science education. In line with these goals, the program offers students a rich educational experience that combines practical training with a hands-on approach, enabling them to achieve high levels of intellectual achievement and personal development.

The Forensic Sciences Program provides an open, welcoming, creative, and adaptable teaching and research environment for students, faculty members, and staff. The outcomes of the program are designed to have a positive impact on the forensic science community, law enforcement agencies, and society as a whole.
