  • Four students from the ÜSSAM internship programme, Sultan Boztepe, Büşra Canlı, Esra Nur Yıldız and Kayra Öztürk, participated in the EUROPA 2024 European Parliament Simulation, which was organised with the contributions of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Kadıköy Municipality. The simulation took place from 14-17 May.

On 14-15 May, our students had the opportunity to attend presentations delivered by Zerrin Keskin, Head of the Communication Department of the Directorate for EU Affairs, and Michal Lanik, Commercial Attaché of Slovakia. They were subsequently able to engage in discussion with Jurgis Vilcinskas, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, on matters pertaining to the Republic of Turkey and the European Union.

  • From 22 to 24 April, the Primakov Center in Moscow held the 7th International Middle East Essay Competition Conference in honour of Evgeny Primakov. The event saw the announcement of the authors of the best research and analytical articles on Middle East issues. A total of 16 students from five different countries participated in the event, with Melike Esentepe, a fourth-year student of political science and international relations at a Turkish university, representing her country.
  • A meeting was held at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 29/04/2024 with the participation of ÜSSAM interns and Mustafa Hulki Cevizoğlu, Member of the Constitutional Commission, Member of the National Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Commission and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, 28th Term Justice and Development Party Istanbul MP Mustafa Hulki Cevizoğlu.
  • Rıdvan Mustafa Öztürk and Ensar Çimen from the Balkans Desk convened with Zeynep YILDIZ, the 27th Term Ankara Deputy and President of the Turkey-Montenegro Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, to discuss matters pertaining to the Balkans and Montenegro.

 

  • Uskudar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Political Science and International Relations 4th year student and Strategic Research Center (ÜSSAM) South Caucasus Desk Intern M. Kayra Öztürk authored an article entitled "Armenia's Strategic Village Restitution and Regional Dynamics." Öztürk highlighted that Armenia has ceased to pursue victimisation policies that were previously employed extensively due to shifting geopolitical dynamics. It can be argued that Armenia is attempting to resolve long-standing disputes with neighbouring countries, which have been characterised as adversaries for an extended period, through its own initiatives. Öztürk additionally asserted that the decision is intended to reinforce Armenia's standing in both domestic and foreign policy arenas.   • In a statement, Prof. Dr. Havva Kök Arslan, a political scientist, asserted that April 24 marks the day when the Committee of Union and Progress government commenced the arrest of Armenian intellectuals in Istanbul during the First World War, thereby inaugurating the deportation process. Prof. Dr. Havva Kök Arslan emphasised that Turkey's stance on this event is predicated on the rejection of the term 'genocide' as a state policy. She stated, "If the peoples of this region can look to the future by leaving the traumas of the First World War behind, Turks, Greeks and Armenians can lay the foundation for a new economic and cultural unity." Professor Dr. Havva Kök Arslan, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations (English) at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Uskudar University, evaluated the date of 24 April, which is accepted as the starting day of the Armenian deportation due to the arrest and deportation of 2,234 people from the Armenian community in Istanbul on 24 April 1915, from the perspective of politics and foreign affairs.   • On 4 April 2024, the International Relations Office of Üsküdar University and the ÜSSAM Africa Working Table convened. At the meeting, which was attended by ÜSSAM Director Prof. Dr. Havva Kök Arslan and ÜSSAM Advisory Board member Enzo İkah, it was resolved to organise an event to commemorate Africa Day on 14 May 2024.
