Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin was a Turkish physician who was born in Amasya in 1385 and made important contributions to medical science throughout his life. His father Ali Çelebi and grandfather Hacı İlyas Çelebi were also famous physicians of the period. Sabuncuoğlu received his medical education from physician Burhanettin Ahmet at the Amasya Darüşşifâsı, which he started at an early age. He started practicing medicine at the age of 17 and conducted in-depth research in the field of medicine throughout his life. He served the people of Anatolia as the chief physician of Amasya Darüşşifâsı for many years.

Influence and Legacy

Sabuncuoğlu brought important innovations to Ottoman medicine and surgery. At the time, surgery was not as accepted as other treatment methods; most physicians were more interested in medication. However, Sabuncuoğlu was one of the first physicians who preferred surgery and conducted studies in this field. His best known work is his surgical book titled "Cerrahiyyetü'l-Haniye". This work was the first illustrated surgical work written in the Ottoman Empire and became an important source in the training of surgeons. The book describes surgical techniques, surgical instruments and treatment methods in detail.

Sabuncuoğlu was also a pioneer of experimental medicine. He tested various drugs, poisons and treatment methods on animals. The antidote he developed against snake venom is one of these experiments. He also applied the methods he tried in the treatment of diseases on himself and observed the results. Sabuncuoğlu's experimental approach shed light on the early stages of modern medicine.

Sabuncuoğlu also made important observations on obstetrics and gynecology and offered solutions for complications during pregnancy. As one of the first physicians to describe hydrocephalus drainage techniques in children, he took an important step in this field of medicine. He also conducted studies and brought innovations in many different fields such as spine surgery and hand surgery.

Sabuncuoğlu's legacy in medicine was influential not only in the Ottoman Empire but also in the entire Islamic world. He pioneered the use of Turkish medical terms and showed the importance of Turkish in the scientific world with his translations. His works were a great source of inspiration for other physicians of his time and are still valuable in terms of today's medicine. Sabuncuoğlu made great contributions to both Ottoman medicine and world medicine with his observations, writings and medical innovations throughout his life.
