Relative Evaluation System

RELATIVE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION DOCUMENT

In all associate and undergraduate programs at our university, the relative evaluation system used in many universities is used in the calculation of success grades. The relative evaluation system is the evaluation of a student's success according to the success levels of other students in the course. The main purpose of using this method is to evaluate students taking a particular course according to their performance within the group taking that course, not according to the absolute grades they receive out of 100 points . The calculation of where a student stands in relation to the class average is done using statistical methods.

In order to explain this system to you, it is first necessary to explain the raw achievement grade;

Raw Success Grade (HBN): Over 100 points, it is the weighted grade calculated from the student's in-semester activities and final exam grades from a course. If we explain in more detail;

It is the sum of the average of midterm, homework, quiz, etc. grades and final grades taken according to the weight rates given by the instructor to the exams. For example, for midterm exams with a weight of 40% and final exams with a weight of 60%, let's say the grades for a course are 70 for midterm and 80 for final. In this case, the HBN is calculated as 76, which is obtained by adding 28, which is 40% of 70, and 48, which is 60% of 80, the final grade.

Another issue to be considered here is the limit of participation in the relative assessment. Students with a raw achievement score below 35 or a final grade below 35 are given a grade of FF directly. Students in this situation and students who are absent are not included in the relative assessment . In this way, it is ensured that the calculation is made over a homogeneous group. If the number of students participating in the relative evaluation among the students taking the course in a class is 8 or less, the raw achievement score is converted into a letter grade according to the absolute evaluation table.

If the number of students participating in Relative Assessment in a course is 9 and above; the raw achievement grades of the students participating in the relative assessment are converted into letter grades by determining new ranges according to the achievement level of the class. For example, even if there are no students with a raw grade between 90-100, this system will assign an AA grade based on the highest range in the relevant course.

If we explain the advantage of relative assessment with an example;

Let A course is taught in a department. For example, the raw grade of the most successful student in course A is 70. If absolute assessment were to be made, the letter grade equivalent of this student's grade would be CC. Therefore, the letter grade of a student with a lower grade, for example a student with a 69, would be DC. In other words, the rest of the class will get grades lower than CC. As can be seen, in absolute assessment, even the most successful student in the class can pass the course with an average grade of CC. In the relative assessment system, on the other hand, a fair grading is done by creating a new table according to the achievement level of this class and making the most appropriate distribution. In this way, a student who fails according to the absolute table in the distribution of a class will be able to pass in the relative assessment.

Of course, in this case, students may have the following question in mind, what if the class average is too high and I fail the course that I will get a passing grade? This part is very important; the grade that the student will receive by applying relative assessment cannot be lower than the grade he / she can get with absolute assessment. For example, a student with a raw grade of 70 cannot receive a letter grade lower than CC even if the class average is very high. With this application, any victimization of our students is also prevented.
