Rasim ADASAL
Rasim Adasal (1902-1990) was a prominent figure in Turkish psychiatry and is considered one of the founders of modern psychiatry in Turkey. He is known for his pioneering work in both medicine and psychiatry and continued his academic career for many years. Who is Rasim Adasal?
Rasim Adasal was born in Crete in 1902 and completed a significant part of his education in Istanbul. His family sent him to Istanbul before World War I, where he graduated from Vefa High School. After his high school education, Adasal enrolled in Istanbul Medical Faculty and continued his education as a military medical student. In 1925, after graduating with the rank of lieutenant physician, he started to work as an assistant in the field of mental and nervous diseases at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Istanbul. During this period in Istanbul, he deepened his interest in psychiatry and completed the departments of Psychology and Philosophy. In 1932, at a young age, he was promoted to associate professor and then to full professor.
Psychiatry Studies
Rasim Adasal's contributions to psychiatry were influential not only locally but also internationally. Between 1936 and 1938, he worked as a foreign assistant in the neurology and psychiatry clinics at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, where his experiences had a profound impact on his career. In 1943, Adasal was appointed as assistant professor at the Neuropsychiatry Clinic of Gülhane Military Medical Academy and soon after he was promoted to professor and became the director of the clinic. During this period, he pioneered a significant change and development in the field of psychiatry in Turkey. In the 1950s, Adasal also assumed the chairmanship of the Ankara Medical Faculty Psychiatry Clinic, where he introduced many innovations in the field of psychiatry. He laid the foundations of modern practices in psychiatry with his academic and clinical studies both at GATA and Ankara Medical Faculty.
One of Adasal's most important contributions was the founding of the Association of Nervous and Psychiatric Physicians. This association enabled professionals in the field of psychiatry to come together to share information and contribute to scientific developments. Adasal achieved a great success with his book Medical Psychology published in 1964. This book was recognized as "the first real medical psychology book" in Europe and became an important reference for psychiatry students at that time. Adasal's works such as Sara Syndrome, Mental Health of the Child, and Mental Diseases are considered among the basic sources of Turkish psychiatry.

Rasim Adasal's influence was not only limited to his own time, but also inspired subsequent generations. His contributions to the development of psychiatry in Turkey, his students and
