Contribution to the century of the family…

Üsküdar Üniversitesi; stating that if the state is the mind of society, then “the family is the heart of society,” has brought the work titled “Wisdom Vaccine for the Family,” penned by Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, to readers with the aim of strengthening it and contributing to the century of the family.

The new book “Wisdom Vaccine for the Family,” by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, which aims to strengthen the institution of the family, is now on the shelves.

Published by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Publications under the editorship of Fatma Özten, the work serves as a solution-oriented guide against the pressures of the modern world on the family.

The first home of the human heart, the refuge of the soul, the safest harbor on life’s journey…

In the preface of his book, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan defined the family as “the first home of the human heart” and pointed out that family ties are directly related to fundamental human psychological needs. Prof. Dr. Tarhan used the expressions, “Family… The first home of the human heart, the refuge of the soul, the safest harbor on life’s journey. The moment a person opens their eyes to this world, they first feel a heart, hear a voice, meet a touch. It is at that moment that the family is sown as a seed in the human heart.”

Emphasizing that modern life challenges the family structure in a multifaceted way, Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that individualization, digitalization, and emotional fatigue weaken family ties. Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “Time passes, technology develops; but the deep-seated human need never changes: To be loved, to be understood, and to belong somewhere. We know that when the roots shake, the whole tree shakes.”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that in his book, he did not treat the family merely as a social structure but placed it at the center of the human process of self-discovery and meaning-making. Therefore, stating that the first chapter of the book is devoted to the individual’s inner journey, Prof. Dr. Tarhan evaluated, “One cannot succeed in loving without knowing oneself, in empathy without understanding one’s emotions, or in sustaining the family without questioning the meaning of life.”

In the work, the teachings of Hz. Mevlâna also hold an important place

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that Mevlâna’s approach to love, compassion, and self-discipline offers a powerful guide for today’s families, saying, “Today’s families need Mevlâna’s timeless language of wisdom more than ever.”

At the heart of the book are topics such as marriage, intra-family balance, empathy, emotional hygiene, and anger and stress management.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan drew attention to the invisible risks silently eroding the family, stating, “The greatest investment to make before the family deteriorates is to strengthen the emotional infrastructure of the relationship.”

In the chapters devoted to child and youth psychology, the effects of the digital age, privacy education, sense of responsibility, and the psychological resilience of young people are discussed.

At this point, Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized, “A healthy society can only be born from healthy families and correctly guided children.”

Strong family ties are an important protective element against traumas

The book also discusses Viktor Frankl’s ‘search for meaning’ approach along with concepts such as Default Mode Network (DMN) and Salience Network (SN) in neuroscience.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan pointed out that strong family ties are an important protective element against traumas, evaluating, “Individuals and families who can attribute meaning to pain achieve psychological resilience more easily. This also functions as a vaccine that protects the family.”

The final chapters of the work include social issues such as values, goodness, helping, culture of solidarity, aging, loneliness, and disability.
Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized that the institution of the family is not only an individual but also a fundamental source of social peace.

What is the purpose of writing the book?

Prof. Dr. Tarhan expressed the purpose of writing the book with these words:

“My aim in writing this book was to offer a ‘family vaccine’ that would protect the family from deterioration, wear and tear, and exhaustion. The essence of this vaccine for family protection is family wisdom.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan wished for the work to leave a lasting impact on readers, saying, “Family is not just a roof. Family is the heart of humanity. Protecting the heart means protecting an entire society and future generations.”

The book “Wisdom Vaccine for the Family” consists of 12 chapters and focuses on awareness that strengthens the family, rather than problems that threaten it.
