What Will the Changed Rules in 2022 YKS Bring?

The thresholds in YKS have been removed, the duration extended… Candidates are now curious about these changes and how they will affect them… Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş, who stated that extending the exam duration is a positive development for candidates, said that the removal of the threshold does not mean everyone will become a university student. Tözeniş emphasized that it is now necessary to discuss efforts to measure university education and subsequent professional competency, rather than just university admission.

Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş: “We should talk about education and competency, not exam admission…

Üsküdar University Educational Institutions and Guidance Services Manager, Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş, evaluated the removal of the threshold in YKS.

Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş stated that with the start of 2022 YKS applications, a rule change was made in the university entrance exam.

Increasing the Duration is a Positive Development…

Referring to the rules that will be valid in the exam in 2022 with the new changes, Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş said, “The duration of the TYT exam has been increased by 30 minutes, making the total exam time 165 minutes. The TYT duration, which was 135 minutes in previous years, has been increased by 30 minutes to 165 minutes. This is a positive development for candidates. In previous years, due to time constraints, a large portion of candidates could not see all the questions in TYT. From this year onwards, candidates will be able to devote more time to questions, so they will not have a problem with not finishing the exam.”

Threshold Scores Removed…

Noting that the 150 and 180 threshold scores used in associate degree and undergraduate preferences have been removed with the change, Ece Tözeniş said:

“With this change, the system applied since 1974 has been terminated. In 2021, approximately 2.6 million candidates applied for YKS. The scores of 1 million 627 thousand 539 people were calculated, and more than 700 thousand candidates could not make preferences because they could not pass the threshold. This caused a large number of quotas to remain empty in state and foundation universities. In the newly implemented system, candidates who get at least half a correct answer in Turkish or mathematics in TYT; and at least half a correct answer from one of the two tests that form the basis for score calculation in AYT, will have their raw scores calculated. After the secondary education success scores are added to their raw scores, candidates will have the right to make preferences with the resulting scores.”

The Conclusion That Everyone Will Be a University Student Should Not Be Drawn

Warning that “it is not correct to conclude from this change that everyone will become a university student,” Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş said, “This is a ranking exam, and candidates will be placed in their preferred departments based on a ranking from the highest to the lowest scores they receive this year. There will be a decrease in the empty quotas of state and foundation universities. From now on, it is necessary to talk more about efforts to measure university education and subsequent professional competency, rather than just university admission. While more students will have the right to make preferences, differences in department quota occupancy will continue to be experienced according to preference tendencies.”

Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş underlined that within the framework of these changes, it will be beneficial for candidates to continue studying regularly without losing their motivation.

Success Ranking Condition Will Continue

Stating that the success ranking condition in some programs will continue, Ece Tözeniş said, “The success ranking condition applied for some departments in previous years will continue in 2022 YKS. For Faculty of Medicine, a minimum rank of 50 thousand; Dentistry, a minimum of 80 thousand; Faculty of Pharmacy, a minimum of 100 thousand; Faculty of Law, a minimum of 100 thousand; Architecture programs, a minimum of 250 thousand; Engineering programs, a minimum of 300 thousand; and Teaching programs (including Guidance and Psychological Counseling program), a minimum success rank of 300 thousand will be sought. Candidates who prefer these programs will be able to make their choices according to the lowest success rank determined in the relevant score type.”

Using 200 and Above Scores Will Be Applied for the Last Time This Year…

Ece Tözeniş said, “The rule of using 200 and above scores, which was applied in previous years, will end as of 2022 YKS, but the scores of 200 and above from 2021 YKS will be used for the last time this year.” Tözeniş added, “Candidates who took the exam last year and scored 200 or above will be able to use these scores for the last time in 2022 YKS. After this year, this rule will not be valid. We can say that the removal of this rule, which was started to reduce the number of candidates applying for TYT, is an appropriate decision as its impact on applications was not significant.”

Universities Will Determine the Base Score for Special Talent Preferences

Noting that universities will determine the base score for special talent preferences from this year onwards, Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş said, “In previous years, there was a requirement for candidates to have at least 150 points in TYT to apply for programs that admit students with special talent exams. From this year onwards, the relevant universities will decide whether a base score requirement will be sought for programs admitting students through special talent exams, and if so, what the minimum score candidates must have to apply.”

YKS Applications Have Started

Üsküdar University Educational Institutions and Guidance Services Manager, Specialist Psychologist Counselor Ece Tözeniş, concluded her words as follows:

“YKS applications, which started on February 11, 2022, will continue until March 07, 2022.
