The "Crush Syndrome in Earthquakes" event, organized by Üsküdar Üniversitesi VSHS as part of the University Culture course, attracted significant interest from students.

Does crush syndrome only occur during earthquakes?
During the online event, Lecturer Meliha Çakmak, Head of the VSHS Dialysis Program, provided information on "Crush Syndrome," emphasizing that kidney failure does not only develop in cases of severe trauma. Çakmak stated, "Sometimes, crush syndrome and subsequent kidney failure can develop in the following days even in cases that initially appear to have mild trauma. Besides earthquakes, traumatic causes such as mine collapses, traffic accidents, wars, torture, and beatings can also lead to crush syndrome."

‘The process should be psychologically supported’
Highlighting the importance of patient care in crush syndrome, Çakmak said, "The patient's pain should be assessed using current scales, and its location, severity, and timing should be evaluated. Existing wounds should be observed for signs of infection and bleeding, and a treatment and care plan should be made according to any additional chronic illnesses. This process should also be psychologically supported."

The event concluded after participants' questions were answered.
