Üsküdar Üniversitesi held a "Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine" event for new-term students and their parents who gained admission to its Faculty of Medicine. The program was held online via Zoom.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, Associate Dean Prof. Dr. Murat Kalemoğlu, as well as academic and administrative staff, attended the program.
“We are always with you”
Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur stated that the university welcomes students with its strong academic staff and infrastructure, saying, “Due to the current process, perhaps face-to-face parent communication could have been neglected, but we will not do this; we are always with you. I hope we will have a very good period closely intertwined with students and their relatives. I am pleased and happy to say that a very good academic staff, with whom we are delighted to be, awaits you. I proudly state that all our infrastructure is ready to educate a contemporary physician of the 21st century. It is up to you to make the utmost effort to utilize the available opportunities.”
“These are the unseen part of the iceberg”
Prof. Dr. Sur; “The life of medicine is not merely examining people, writing prescriptions, ordering tests, and then telling them to go home, rest for twenty days, and then come back for a check-up. These are the visible tip of the iceberg. The real essence is to enter a person's social, physical, and psychological world, fully assess their health conditions, and be a physician who can enable them to continue their life as a social being, which is not enough just by acquiring the positive, normative rules and knowledge of medical science. Additionally, I would like to remind you that there is an obligation to benefit from social sciences and fine arts,” he said.
“Medicine is learned through a master-apprentice relationship”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that medicine can only be built on a solid foundation through a master-apprentice relationship, stating; “Medicine is a profession of great responsibility. A person comes to you and trusts you to be cured. We must consider how we will provide medical service according to the patient's best interest. The patient's best interest is more important than the physician's interest and the institution's interest. Someone who does not hold this view does not comply with medical ethics. As Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we aim to teach you not only academic knowledge but also life success. We have embarked on a six-year journey with our students. When you have a problem, you can share it with your advisor professors and your dean. Medicine is learned through a master-apprentice relationship. Therefore, do not hesitate to ask your professors questions,” he said.
