A 'Pre-Graduation Medical Education Accreditation Workshop' was organized by the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine. During the workshop, the pre-graduation medical education accreditation process was discussed in all its aspects, and the current status of the faculty was evaluated, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. At the same time, a roadmap for the accreditation process was created in line with a human-centered educational approach, a sustainable quality culture, and contemporary teaching methods.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founder Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, along with academic and administrative staff of the Faculty of Medicine, attended the workshop held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi NP Sağlık Yerleşkesi.

During the workshop, it was emphasized that accreditation is not merely a document, but a process aiming to sustainably improve the quality of education.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: "Quality is a continuously evolving consciousness"

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founder Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drew attention to the importance of institutionalizing a culture of quality during the workshop, emphasizing that accreditation processes require continuity. Tarhan said; 'Quality is not a one-time audit, but a continuously evolving consciousness. It's not enough to think we are good; we need to prove it.'

"If we just 'pretend,' it won't hold together"

Tarhan stated that accreditation cannot be maintained with superficial approaches; 'If we just 'pretend' with accreditation, it won't hold together. Even if it does, it won't be deeply rooted and sustainable.'

"Medical education should be conducted with a human-centered approach"

Tarhan, also touching upon the quality of medical education, stated that the process should be conducted with a human-centered approach. Tarhan, who said 'Medical education should be conducted with an approach that not only transmits knowledge but also centers on humans,' summarized the fundamental approach of the accreditation process with the words: 'Write what you will do, do what you write.'

Tarhan, emphasizing the meticulousness of auditing mechanisms, mentioned that the process is a journey that enhances quality in education and healthcare services.

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur: "The first question families ask is about accreditation"

Speaking at the workshop, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur emphasized that accreditation is no longer an option but a necessity for faculties. Sur stated; 'After the university exam results are announced, the first question families ask is about accreditation. Not having graduates is no longer an excuse.'

Sur, noting that the accreditation process requires a long-term and multifaceted effort, stated that strengths should be documented and deficient areas should be systematically developed during this process.

A sustainable quality approach is also fundamental

Sur stated that medical education accreditation has a different structure from healthcare services or hospital accreditation; 'Education accreditation is a holistic evaluation process that encompasses all components of pre-graduation medical education.' Sur emphasized that this approach considers not only the current situation but also a sustainable quality understanding, and he expressed that accreditation creates a quality culture that extends to every stage of education.

Evaluation conducted under six main headings

In the workshop conducted in line with national standards:

-    Institutional identity,

-    Educational program,

-    Student relations,

-    Academic staff,

-    Infrastructure and educational facilities, and

-    Governance processes were addressed under six main headings.

Strengths and areas for improvement were identified, and a roadmap was created.

Emphasis on diversity in teaching methods

During the workshop, it was stated that problem-based learning, case discussions, and interactive methods should be increased alongside presentation-based education. It was also noted that strengthening the integration between basic sciences and clinical sciences would contribute to the quality of education.

While the workshop continued with tabletop group studies, the aim is for the emerging views and suggestions to guide the accreditation process of the Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine.
