A ‘data’-driven process has begun in patient treatment and follow-up…

Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi continue to support significant global studies in the field of neuroscience.

Üsküdar University, in collaboration with the US-based Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT), represented Turkey at the G20 Neuroscience20 (N20) Summit held this year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 16-17, 2024.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stated, “With the BraiNP/NP Model developed by analyzing neuroimaging data collected at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi for 26 years, artificial intelligence algorithms are effectively used in the preliminary diagnosis of various psychiatric diseases.”

Shared with participants from over 20 different countries…

Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, in collaboration with the US-based Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT), represented Turkey at the G20 Neuroscience20 (BRAIN-SPINE-MENTAL-HEALTH) Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the summit, which took place on November 16-17, 2024, Üsküdar University Founding Rector and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, shared the work carried out at the university and NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi with participants from over 20 different countries.

The N20 platform encourages interdisciplinary cooperation

The G20 Neuroscience20 (N20) summit focuses on the potential of neuroscience and big data-driven approaches to shape the future. Big data analytics in neuroscience offers unique opportunities to better understand complex processes in the brain, enable early diagnosis of neurological diseases, and develop individualized treatment methods. In this context, artificial intelligence algorithms and machine learning models play a critical role in processing, analyzing, and interpreting neural datasets. The N20 platform aims to foster interdisciplinary cooperation and advance fundamental issues such as data sharing and standardization, as well as the creation of ethical frameworks.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to the importance of artificial intelligence and big data in health sciences

At the summit held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, on November 16-17, 2024, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan presented the application of big data in health sciences with his talk "Role of Technology in Clinical Neuroscience Across the G20 Healthcare," and shared best practices regarding projects and university-industry collaboration at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi and Üsküdar University in this field.

Reducing medical errors is also targeted…

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to the importance of artificial intelligence and big data in health sciences, emphasizing that these technologies play a critical role in reducing medical errors and in personalized treatment approaches.

Neuroimaging data collected for 26 years is used in the preliminary diagnosis of psychiatric diseases

Explaining that with the addition of the "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Innovation in Health" course to the curriculum of Medical Faculty students at Üsküdar University, the aim is for prospective physicians to gain competence in artificial intelligence and big data analytics, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan continued:

Artificial intelligence eliminates the need for a physician's wisdom…

“With the BraiNP/NP Model, developed by analyzing neuroimaging data collected at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi for 26 years, artificial intelligence algorithms are effectively used in the preliminary diagnosis of various psychiatric diseases. Artificial intelligence technologies eliminate the need for a physician's wisdom.”

Next-generation technologies used in treatment were explained

Tarhan noted that studies in this field will improve the quality of healthcare services, and with next-generation quantum computing and neuromorphic computing methods, drug modeling or treatment follow-up processes that take years will be modeled with high accuracy in seconds. Expressing that the pioneering work carried out within NP in this regard is also exciting, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also mentioned the new generation photobiomodulation technologies used in the hospital, along with the effective results of TMS treatments (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) used for various diseases, especially at NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi.

New capital: ‘Data’

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "data" is the new capital for the upcoming period, correctly linking fields such as molecular biology, bioengineering, medicine, computer engineering, and software engineering within the university.

A data-driven process has begun in patient treatment and follow-up…

M. Fırat Tarhan, a Member of the Board of Trustees of NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi and Üsküdar University, also stated in his speech that the use of big data in health management and hospital systems offers great opportunities to improve the quality of patient care and optimize operational processes. Fırat Tarhan said that in-depth analysis of patient data allows for more effective outcomes in chronic disease management.

Emphasizing that big data-driven approaches trigger a revolution that both increases patient satisfaction and makes healthcare systems more sustainable, Fırat Tarhan highlighted that they are conducting a data-driven treatment and follow-up process within NPİSTANBUL.

Facial emotion recognition model…

Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, while addressing the potential of initiatives like the ME+ Brain Initiative built under the SBMT umbrella to carry local development to regional and global development, also spoke about the big data-driven studies and the NP Model application that have been ongoing at the university for many years, deep learning-focused clinical applications, and facial emotion recognition, diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive models developed through university-hospital collaboration.

Neuromorphic computers

Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel emphasized innovative approaches in neuroscience by focusing on big data, biomarkers, and neuromorphic computers at the N20 Summit, noting that a 1-unit investment in big data analytics would yield a 250-unit return within 2 years.

Stating that they play a critical role in the early diagnosis of neurological diseases and the development of personalized treatment plans, Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel said, “The detection of biomarkers enables the understanding of diseases at a molecular level, thus improving diagnostic and treatment processes. Neuromorphic computers, with their structures mimicking the human brain's functioning, offer highly efficient and energy-saving computing possibilities in neuroscience research. The integration of these technologies allows for more in-depth analyses in neuroscience research and more effective management of neurological diseases.”
