What is GreenMetric? (Green University Index)
GreenMetric is an international platform open to the participation of all higher education institutions worldwide, encouraging internationalization, drawing attention to sustainability-related issues, and aiming to create global awareness regarding environmental consciousness. Each year, many universities from different countries are evaluated by GreenMetric in areas such as infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water resources, transportation, and education, scored for each evaluation area, and higher education institutions are ranked according to their total scores from these evaluations.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is an international platform launched by the University of Indonesia in 2010, which evaluates the sustainability efforts of universities worldwide on an annual basis and global scale. The GreenMetric Ranking is open to participation from reputable universities across the globe and aims to create global awareness regarding environmental sustainability.
UI GreenMetric can help increase website visits and boost internationalization and recognition as a result of evaluating universities' existing efforts within sustainability. It plays an important role in raising awareness about sustainability by comparing efforts through evaluations related to sustainable development, sustainability research, and campus greening. In addition to raising awareness, UI GreenMetric also encourages concrete change. Universities participating in the ranking can connect with other participating universities worldwide and share their practices in sustainability programs.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings serve as a tool for our world to cope with the sustainability challenges it faces. Many universities can work together to measure, monitor, and evaluate their strategic plans within sustainability and to reduce negative environmental impacts.
Methodology
The GreenMetric philosophy is based on a broad approach that examines sustainability efforts in environmental, social, and economic fields.
Universities are evaluated in categories such as infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, and education. GreenMetric primarily focuses on the size of universities' green areas, zoning profiles, energy consumption, measured carbon footprint, education and research related to environmental sustainability, and existing policies. Universities are scored separately for each category and ranked according to the total scores obtained from all these categories.
The United Nations aims to end poverty, protect the environment, take action against the climate crisis, share prosperity fairly, and ensure peace by 2030, by developing integrated approaches to sustainable development. The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (Sustainable Development Goals-SDG) are addressed in the UI GreenMetric criteria and indicators.
