The project by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir, Head of the Philosophy Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Üsküdar University, was accepted by the European Environment Foundation (ECF). The project, an international call in the field of environment and ecosystem named “Al – Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth”, will be supported with 40 thousand Euros.
Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir submitted a project proposal to the European Environment Foundation (ECF) under the name “Al – Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth”, calling the world to an international agreement to protect the environment. The project, which will contribute to nature and the ecosystem worldwide, was accepted by the ECF. It was learned that the project is valued at 40 thousand Euros. The project's subject is known as Al-Mizan: An Islamic Covenant for the Earth from Concept to Practice. Within the scope of the project, ways to work in harmony with the heartbeat of the natural world will be explored for the purpose of nature conservation.
According to Prof. Dr. Özdemir, environmentalism, which is the subject of the project, is deeply rooted in the veins of Islam. According to the project, just as we behave carefully in our personal conduct and relationships with others, we must also be respectful and considerate towards natural life and other living beings. These qualities are praised and exemplified in many verses of the Qur'an. For example, in Surah Al-i İmran, verse 104, it is stated;
“Let there be among you a community that calls to goodness, commands what is right, and forbids what is wrong; those are the ones who will succeed.”
The word Al-Mizan is based on Surah Ar-Rahman, verses 1-9, where Almighty Allah describes creation with its perfect balance:
“The Most Merciful, taught the Qur’an. He created humanity. He taught them eloquent speech. The sun and the moon move with precise calculation. And the stars and the trees prostrate. And He raised the heaven and set the balance (Mizan). So that you do not transgress the balance (Mizan), establish the weight with justice and do not fall short in the balance (Mizan).”
Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir embarked on a path with the “Al – Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth” project, calling for international cooperation to protect nature. Özdemir aims to carry out studies in the field of ecosystem conservation and development within the scope of the project.
The project also aims to contribute to international cooperation and the development of the environmental ecosystem.
