Üsküdar University New Academic Year Orientations Began with Medicine and Dentistry

Üsküdar University has started its new academic year orientation programs. Initially, the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry Orientation programs were held. During the orientation program, attended by Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Yumuşhan Günay, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, the departments and directorates operating within Üsküdar University provided information to newly registered students prior to the new academic year.

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur: “You should chart a course to acquire general culture”

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, provided information to newly admitted Üsküdar University students regarding career acquisition and education in their field. Prof. Dr. Sur said; 'Fulfilling the responsibility of acquiring a profession and preparing oneself for life means gradually assuming adult roles, and at the same time, being able to play that adult role well in life itself, which is where life's circulation actually takes place. Looking at it from this perspective, when they say 'don't cheat on exams,' it strikes me as odd. I've never warmed to such things, and I hope you never do either. If a person attempts to cheat in university, they will develop a personality ready to drift and steal for success throughout their life. Try to shape the kind of person you want to be in life during your university years.'

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur emphasized that students should develop themselves in all areas, stating; 'As instructors, we will try to impart not only medicine but also what is right for you in life. One cannot become an international person by only learning medicine. You need to know a foreign language, play at least one instrument, and have knowledge of world geography. You should chart a course to acquire general culture.'

Assist. Prof. Dr. Nuri Bingöl: “Classes are always face-to-face”

Assist. Prof. Dr. Nuri Bingöl, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, gave an informative presentation on distance education, providing details about the platforms used by the university for classes. Bingöl stated; 'Classes are always face-to-face; YÖK (Council of Higher Education) only allows up to a maximum of 30% distance education. This includes courses like History of Revolution and Turkish Language. In extreme cases, they will be online. When that happens, you will use LMS, this platform. The university has several platforms; one of them is the distance education platform LMS. Our second platform is OBS, the Student Affairs Information System. Students can communicate with instructors through the STIX or ALMS systems.'

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek: “As a medical doctor, the greatest good is to first do no harm to them.”

As part of the orientation program, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek, Head of the Department of Medical Pathology, delivered a presentation on medical history to medical students titled 'Sultans of Medicine in the World and Among Turks from Yesterday to Today'. Prof. Dr. Öztek said; 'Hippocrates' famous saying 'Primum non nocere' or 'First, do no harm.' As medical doctors, as medical students, on the path to becoming a team, when we encounter others tomorrow or the day after, the greatest good we can do for them is to first do no harm. This saying, which was highly important in the Anglo-Saxon era of the 19th century, has now become a principle for all people in the medical world. Here we see Hippocrates, and it is located there in his symbol.' Continuing to provide important information to students during the conference, Öztek also gave information about Ibn Sina in the Ibn Sina Auditorium where the conference was held. Prof. Dr. Öztek stated: 'The person we see in this cover image, who lent his name to the Ibn Sina Auditorium, is the world's greatest medical scientist, astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher. Westerners named him Avicenna. To eliminate the attribution that he was Iranian or Arab, as a large part of his works were in Persian or Arabic, Russian scholars opened his tomb and, through anthropological research, proved him to be a pure Turk. He was born in Samarkand, and they used this image and a similar statue in appropriate places.'

Prof. Dr. Yumuşhan Günay: “You have become a member of a strong, large family with 23 thousand members, namely Üsküdar University”

Prof. Dr. Yumuşhan Günay, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, emphasized that students should engage in social responsibility and an art branch outside the faculty. Günay stated; 'I want to underline two things. One of them is that we will focus your interests outside the faculty a bit more on social responsibility areas. What are the social areas, parcels, islands that require social responsibility in our country? What are their dynamics? As a human, a doctor, and a dentist, where in these 'islands' can we take on what role? We must ask ourselves this question. The second is that you should engage with one of the branches of any art form, not just as a spectator but as a practitioner. Believe me, if you do these two things, you will gain a very significant broadening of perception in two different dimensions regarding life, your city, and our country. Also, I need to emphasize this: Do not see yourselves merely as members of a faculty. You have also become a member of a strong, large family with 23 thousand members, just like you, namely Üsküdar University.'
