Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak and the Deputy Director of the Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) and Head of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program Instructor Esad Sadık Demirtaş attended the “Disaster-Ready University” coordination meeting, held within the scope of the cooperation protocol between AFAD and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). At the meeting, strengthening universities' disaster preparedness capacity, increasing disaster awareness, and expanding volunteerism efforts were discussed.

Üsküdar University Attended the “Disaster-Ready University” Coordination Meeting

The meeting, held at the Istanbul Hasdal Campus of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), was chaired by Istanbul Deputy Governor Mahmut Hersanlıoğlu. Istanbul AFAD Provincial Director Prof. Haluk Özener also participated in the meeting. Üsküdar University was represented at the meeting by Prof. Hikmet Koçak and Instructor Esad Sadık Demirtaş.
Universities' Disaster Preparedness Capacity Discussed
The meeting was held within the scope of the cooperation protocol signed between AFAD and YÖK on March 4, 2026. Within the scope of the protocol, it is aimed to increase disaster awareness, reduce disaster risks, develop disaster volunteerism in higher education institutions, and carry out studies to strengthen universities' disaster preparedness capacity.

Disaster Awareness and Volunteerism Efforts to be Supported
In line with the “Disaster-Ready University” approach, it is aimed to ensure more active participation of universities in disaster management processes. In this context, it is planned to support academic activities, as well as joint research and development studies, alongside education, volunteerism, and drill activities.
The protocol also foresees the development of courses, modules, and training content in disaster management and risk reduction, the inclusion of disaster awareness in student orientations, and the encouragement of student communities compatible with the AFAD Volunteerism System. The widespread adoption of campus drills and field applications is also among the areas of cooperation.
Aim to Reflect Universities' Capacity in Disaster Efforts
Within the scope of the protocol, which aims for universities' academic, technical, physical, and human resource capacity to contribute to provincial-level disaster risk management efforts, the activities carried out are planned to be monitored and evaluated through joint committees.
