Üsküdar Üniversitesi in the ‘2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year Commemorative Book’

The Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation for Research on the History of Islamic Science (IBTAV) published the “2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year Commemorative Book” within the scope of the “2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year.” Üsküdar Üniversitesi has carried out significant work related to Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin to date, naming a conference hall after him and deeming him worthy of the High Human Values Award in 2019. All of the university's work concerning Sezgin was included in the commemorative book.  

Üsküdar Üniversitesi organized many meaningful events within the framework of the “Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year” in 2019. 

In this context, Üsküdar's events were featured in the “2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year Commemorative Book” published by the Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Foundation for Research on the History of Islamic Science (IBTAV).

Savaş Cihangir Tali undertook the editorship of the book, with Prof. Dr. Ersan Aslan serving as project coordinator.

Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin was deemed worthy of the High Human Values Award

The High Human Values Awards, organized annually by Üsküdar Üniversitesi with the aim of rewarding behaviors, events, and individuals who serve as examples to society and encourage goodness for the development of social values, found their recipients for the fourth time in 2019.

In this context, Dr. Ursula Sezgin, his wife, received the High Human Values Award on behalf of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin. 

Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin was commemorated in a panel discussion

Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin was commemorated with a program held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, which included a panel discussion titled “Fuat Sezgin and the Islamic Heritage Against Western-Centric Scientific Understanding.” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the importance of upholding identity and culture to stand firm against imperialism, stating that Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin was one of the first to recognize and champion this.

During the event, Tarhan also underlined that Fuat Sezgin was the one who found the missing links in science. Tarhan explained the importance of Sezgin's scientific work with these words: “When you look at the history of science, it seemed as if science ended with Islam and then restarted in Europe. We were taught this way. It was necessary to scientifically demonstrate that this was wrong. Our teacher Fuat Sezgin demonstrated this by going through references and manuscripts, using scientific methodology.”

Fuat Sezgin’s name lives on at Üsküdar Üniversitesi…

The late science historian Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin’s name was given to a conference hall at Üsküdar Üniversitesi. Within the scope of the “2019 Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Year” declared by the Presidency, a panel titled “Fuat Sezgin and the Islamic Heritage Against Western-Centric Scientific Understanding” and the opening ceremony of the Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall were held at Üsküdar Üniversitesi.

Speaking at the opening of the program, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that Fuat Sezgin was a great scientist and stated their happiness in implementing the decision, made long ago, to keep his name alive at the university. 

An essay competition was also organized

Within the scope of the 2019 Fuat Sezgin Year activities by Üsküdar Üniversitesi and Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education, an essay competition titled “Fuat Sezgin Against Western-Centric Scientific Understanding” was organized for high school students in Istanbul.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hadiye Yılmaz Odabaşı, Head of the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Üsküdar Üniversitesi; Dr. Lect. Uygar Aydemir from the Department of History; Dr. Lect. Fehmi Ağca from the Department of Political Science and International Relations; Dr. Lect. Sait Ocaklı; and Author Mustafa Aldı served as members of the essay evaluation jury.

Sena Nur Dilek from Bağcılar Anatolian High School was ranked first with her essay titled “Fuat Sezgin’s Contributions and Importance in the Field of Islamic Science and Technologies,” Yılmaz Baha Güven from Kadıköy Hayrullah Kefoğlu Anatolian High School was second with his essay “A Life Dedicated to Science,” and İhsan Burak Ergin from Şişli Mehmet Pisak Anatolian High School was deemed worthy of third place with his essay “Fuat Sezgin, the Elder of Intellectuals.”
