Üsküdar University, which has attracted attention with its academic studies since its establishment in 2011 with artificial intelligence applications in Health Sciences, has opened a course titled “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Innovation in Health" for its Faculty of Medicine students starting from the 2023-2024 academic year. Thus, Faculty of Medicine students will be able to observe modeling approaches used especially in big data analysis through practical project applications.
Paradigm Shift in Personalized Medicine Applications
In Health Sciences, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) play a significant role with their potential for innovation, disease diagnosis, monitoring, and predicting treatment response, transforming how healthcare services are delivered. With high resolution and evolving data collection tools, health data paves the way for many exciting new discoveries in clinical interpretation processes, especially in biomarker detection. With AI applications, high-speed machines, and big data, we can speak of a paradigm shift towards precision medicine. Throughout this process, predictive models created with deep learning algorithms, replacing old-generation superficial learning algorithms, provide physicians with higher accuracy in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment processes using raw data.
Widespread adoption of high-accuracy models in diagnosis and treatment will be ensured…
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan of Üsküdar University, the 'Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Application and Research Center' has been pursuing this vision for 10 years, conducting interdisciplinary studies with the 'Therapeutic Brain Mapping, Biological Psychiatry, and Neurotechnology working group' where psychiatry, psychology, molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, and engineering fields collaborate. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the importance of the subject by stating, 'Artificial intelligence technologies will eliminate the need for a physician's wisdom,' while aiming for the widespread use of high-accuracy models in health sciences that combine a physician's knowledge and clinical experience, enabling quick decision-making in diagnosis and treatment processes.
Completion of the clinical interpretation project is aimed…
With the "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Innovation" course, which will be offered at Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine and taken by all students starting from their 4th year, prospective physicians will gain the skills to develop basic coding skills with a programming language, learn and use big data, machine learning, image processing, optimization, and modeling concepts with application tools, and interpret them. Üsküdar University, currently conducting big data analysis studies with its scientific and application partner NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi and having patented the application developed in this process with an international patent application, aims for students to complete a clinical interpretation project of the model results obtained from big data analysis of raw neuroimaging data at the end of the 16-week curriculum.
AI and data-focused courses will contribute to clinical competency…
Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Application and Research Center, stated that they believe AI and big data-focused courses, also offered at medical faculties of universities like Harvard, Stanford, and Imperial College London, will provide students with complementary skills in developing and diversifying their basic and clinical competencies.
