Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “The Most Beautiful Sport Starts in the Brain”
Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, provided information to the athletes on psychological resilience. Tarhan stated; “Sport makes the brain secrete endorphin hormone. The endorphin hormone has two properties: one is its pain-relieving property, and the other is its ability to provide comfort. Endorphin is secreted during exercise. It is a beneficial thing, of course, protecting many young people from turning to harmful paths. It protects from many negative things. The most beautiful sport starts in the brain. The organ that performs sports is actually the brain, not the arms or legs. If the brain believes, the organs obey it. The most important feature of the human brain is its ability to think long-term. If a person can think 'What will happen five years from now, ten years from now? What will happen at the end of life? What kind of mark will the work I do leave behind? What will it bring me in terms of material and spiritual gain?', then they are filled with peace. Adding meaning to one's work gives a person peace. If that meaning is not added, it becomes merely a temporary thing. If a person who can surpass themselves can do something for themselves, for society, for the world, then it becomes lasting happiness.”
