“A design suitable for everyone is universal design”
Pirol, who talked about the aims of Rehabilitation Engineering, said; “If we define rehabilitation engineering first, we can define it as the systematic application of engineering approaches in technology and various fields to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities or to facilitate their lives. In fact, these definitions can include not only individuals with disabilities but also elderly individuals. So, they are within this scope. However, since the primary target group in rehabilitation is individuals with disabilities, universal design is for them to move more comfortably, to live their lives independently, and to communicate more easily. That is, if they have any problems, for example, related to hearing or vision, the aim is to reduce these as much as possible. We call the systems and devices we develop under this target 'assistive technology'. In rehabilitation engineering, these devices and systems cover a very wide area, from simple crutches to advanced smart prostheses. When we look at the definition of universal design in rehabilitation engineering, we can actually say it is a study carried out by designers and engineers to direct the flow of life and enable people to be more comfortable. In short, what do we call universal design?
We can say that a good design for everyone, that is, a design suitable for everyone, is universal design.” he said.
“Designs for individuals with disabilities in Turkey are improving”
Pirol, who stated that there is 'accessible design' which is added later in Turkey, and that this is a disadvantage, said; “Designs for individuals with disabilities in Turkey are improving. Adaptive design, which involves installing special equipment to enable a disabled individual to use a bus and improving wheelchairs, significantly contributes to the lives of individuals with disabilities.” he stated.
