Political Scientist Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci, evaluating US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan and the subsequent approval of the first phase of the Gaza Plan by Israel and Hamas, said, “The US administration's initiative and proposal of a ceasefire and peace plan has been an extremely positive development. Those who contributed to this effort should be congratulated.”

Pointing out that there are some ambiguous areas in the 21-article peace plan, Örmeci stated, “Our wish, in line with the traditional direction of Turkish foreign policy, is for a two-state solution aligned with the 1967 borders to be implemented in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Evaluating Türkiye's and Ankara's position, Örmeci used the expressions, “Türkiye has made a great contribution to world peace and humanity by actively providing facilitation and mediation.”

Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci, a faculty member at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and International Relations, evaluated US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan and the subsequent approval of the first phase of the Israel and Hamas Gaza Plan.

According to this agreement, which constitutes the first phase of the US Gaza Plan, Israel and Hamas have agreed to the rapid release of hostages. Israel's withdrawal to the agreed-upon point and the release of some Palestinian prisoners are other agreed-upon articles.

Proposing a ceasefire and peace plan is an extremely positive development

Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci said, “First and foremost, in an environment of an urgent humanitarian crisis, the US administration's initiative and proposal of a ceasefire and peace plan, influenced by Türkiye's contacts with the United Nations and the US through its President, and also by the Muslim Leaders Summit held within the scope of the 80th UN General Assembly, has been an extremely positive development. Those who contributed to this effort should be congratulated.”

There are also some ambiguous areas in the 21-article peace plan

Emphasizing that Türkiye's traditional foreign policy line is based on a two-state solution aligned with the 1967 borders in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci stated, “Our wish, in line with the traditional direction of Turkish foreign policy, is for a two-state solution aligned with the 1967 borders to be implemented in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While there are some concrete and positive articles in this regard in President Trump’s announced 21-article peace plan, it is also clear that some ambiguous areas regarding the existence and legitimacy of the Palestinian state, which still holds observer state status at the UN, remain.”

There are positive articles on issues such as the reconstruction of Gaza

Noting that the plan contains positive articles on issues such as the non-evacuation of Gazans from the region, the cessation of attacks on Qatar, and the reconstruction of Gaza, Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci continued:

“In this context, what will crown this plan is, of course, the administration of Gaza by a civil government reflecting the will of the Palestinians after the interim administration. In this process, financial and expert support from European and Muslim states will be extremely beneficial and necessary.”

What was Ankara’s role in the process?

Emphasizing Türkiye's role in this process, Prof. Dr. Ozan Örmeci concluded his words as follows:

“Türkiye has made a great contribution to world peace and humanity by actively providing facilitation and mediation on many issues, especially Hamas's prisoner exchange, during this process. The continuation of this and the understanding of Ankara's peaceful and humanitarian approaches are extremely beneficial for the image of our state and people in the world.”
