The Secret of the 21st Century is to Be a Good Person!

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was the guest of the Batman Provincial Directorate of National Education. Making important statements under the title of “New Truths in Education and 21st Century Education,” Tarhan emphasized that 21st-century skill is not rote learning but learning by experience.

“The 21st Century is the era of learning by experience”

Emphasizing that the most important skill of the 21st century is learning by experience rather than memorizing information, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Active learning is teaching through experience. We will teach children the method of learning, not just information. If we don’t teach children to think, they will become students who imitate and repeat. Unfortunately, our education system, especially our veteran teachers, is currently resisting this. The current era is one of learning through experience.

“Some professions will disappear”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there was a rapid shift to digitalization during the pandemic, and those who resisted digital transformation had to give in. Tarhan said, “With digitalization and the changes Covid brought to technology, there was a rapid change in method. This will also cause the content of education to change. Current global education was not solely value-oriented and belief-oriented. However, 21st-century skills require these. With artificial intelligence, some professions will disappear in 20-30 years. Against these disappearing professions, we should direct our children towards value-oriented, belief-oriented, social skills, music, and art-focused subjects.”

“Positive Psychology should be introduced in primary school”

Stating that social, mental, and natural scientists in the Western world are conducting welfare-enhancing studies, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said: “Universities are doing this before science; values education is not taught through conferences and sermons, but in modules. For example, the Positive Psychology course we offer is a subject that should be taught starting from primary school; students need to be taught to be honest and hardworking. Additionally, it is necessary to emphasize that opportunism should not be an ego ideal.”
