As the university candidates' preference marathon continues, Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci, Dean of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, explained the engineering discipline that guides technological and industrial developments. Stating that environmentally friendly technologies need to be developed to cope with global problems such as increasing population, energy demand, and climate change, Çerezci said, “The new world awaits engineers who are environmentally conscious and possess skills to adapt to sustainability and digitalization.”
Digitalization and artificial intelligence technologies play an important role in increasing efficiency in industry and enabling the development of next-generation products and services. Engineering, an important discipline that guides technological and industrial developments, is often preferred by young people as it will ensure the strengthening and progress of future innovations and solutions. Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci, Dean of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, states that young people's tendency to study engineering and genetics will lead to significant advancements in these fields. Çerezci said, “The new world awaits engineers who are environmentally conscious and possess skills to adapt to sustainability and digitalization. To cope with global problems such as increasing population, energy demand, and climate change, engineers must be equipped with knowledge and competencies in these areas for the development of environmentally sensitive technologies, which will contribute to the realization of successful and effective projects.”
Çerezci evaluated the tendency to choose engineering and genetics fields as follows:
“Engineers should conduct multidisciplinary studies”
“The trend in the field of genetics will bring significant advancements in areas such as agriculture, health, and biotechnology. I believe that interest in these fields can lead to more effective and sustainable solutions for future problems. Today's rapid changes in technology and digitalization processes require engineers to engage in multidisciplinary work.”
Engineering education has transformed
Çerezci pointed out that instead of focusing solely on technical knowledge in engineering, students also need to develop skills such as problem-solving, information utilization, communication, and teamwork. He stated, “Giving importance to social sciences and ethical issues during engineering education will enable the provision of more sensitive and sustainable solutions to societal problems. Our faculty includes departments of Forensic Sciences, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Bioengineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Molecular Biology and Genetics. As a result of the opportunity to take courses from other departments, we offer a very rich list of elective courses and curriculum. Our engineering departments' educational curricula are designed to be compatible with current technologies and industry needs. Furthermore, through laboratory work and project-based learning opportunities, we ensure that students reinforce their theoretical knowledge with practical applications.” he said.
“We have integrated technology into our educational processes”
Stating that digitalization and artificial intelligence technologies offer significant contributions in education and professional fields, Çerezci said, “In education, online learning platforms, virtual laboratories, and simulations enable students to learn more effectively. With AI-supported learning methods, different educational opportunities can also be offered to students. We plan to integrate these technologies into our educational processes to contribute to our students' more efficient learning.” he said.
Becoming an engineer has become more challenging…
Noting that the engineering discipline has become increasingly complex today, Çerezci said, “Rapid advancements and diversity in technology mean that engineers constantly need to stay updated and possess a broader range of knowledge. This is why becoming an engineer has become more challenging compared to the past. However, thanks to digitalization and communication technologies, access to information has become easier, and working methods have evolved. Therefore, engineering education and practice have become even easier with specialization in specific areas and collaborative work.” he said.
Çerezci stated that graduates of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences graduate with an interdisciplinary perspective, proficiency in current technologies, equipped with practical skills, and developed communication abilities, and that their internships help students gain experience in various companies. He also listed the career fields for graduates as follows:
Many employment opportunities are available…
“Our graduates are employed in many fields related to engineering, such as software development companies, information technologies, the gaming and mobile application sector, health, energy, electronics, industry, chemistry, biomedical and genetic studies, and production management. Additionally, our entrepreneurial graduates can also emerge with leadership skills and project management competencies.”
