The Nature of Science, Systematicity…

Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences' 2022-2023 Fall Semester Faculty Seminar events are continuing. At the event held in Socrates Hall, E Block, South Campus, Res. Asst. Buğra Can Bayçifci from Üsküdar University's Department of History gave a presentation about the work titled “Systematicity: The Nature of Science (Sistematiklik: Bilimin Doğası).”

Res. Asst. Buğra Can Bayçifçi, “German philosopher Paul Hoyningen-Huene conducted a discussion that appeals to all areas of social sciences”

Res. Asst. Buğra Can Bayçifçi, who started his speech by introducing the author of the work, German philosopher Paul Hoyningen-Huene, stated: “The author put forth a comprehensive understanding of science, conducting a discussion that appeals not only to the field of history but almost to all areas of social sciences, and emphasized that the author's understanding of science follows the German scientific tradition ('Wissenschaft') instead of the Anglo-Saxon tradition. Res. Asst. Bayçifci continued by stating that the author's main motivation was his belief that the answers given to the question 'What is science?' in the current philosophy of science literature are insufficient. According to him, the author examines the philosophy of science literature extending from Plato and Aristotle to contemporary thinkers Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn. He stated that in the discussion made through this literature in the work, criticism was brought against the method of comparing pseudoscience with science.”

In the final part of the presentation, Res. Asst. Bayçifci, who examined the weak and strong aspects of the work, stated: “He discussed the possibilities of 'Systematicity,' which also gives the work its name, being the sole distinguishing characteristic of science. Furthermore, based on the author's views, he emphasized that the characteristics of especially the discipline of history and other academic disciplines as sciences should be evaluated.”

The program concluded with answering participants' questions.
