The Importance of Self-Awareness in Career Journey Discussed at Future Talks

The Sectoral Collaborations Office, affiliated with the Üsküdar University Career Center Department, organized a Future Talks event. In the career talk titled “While Searching for Myself: Career Choices and the Courage to Change Direction,” the importance of self-awareness, recognizing one's own desires and expectations, and the ability to change direction when necessary in one's career journey was discussed.

The event, held at Üsküdar University Main Campus, hosted Life and Career Coach, Author Şeyma Gizem Taşar.

During the event, it was emphasized that a career journey is not merely about choosing a profession or a position. In this context, the role of self-awareness, recognizing one's desires and priorities, in making more informed career decisions was highlighted.

“We Need to Recognize Our Interests and Priorities”

Life and Career Coach, Author Şeyma Gizem Taşar said; “In career choices, one must first get to know themselves and question what they truly want. Sometimes expectations from our environment, paths drawn by others for us, or goals defined as success by society can overshadow our own desires. At this point, it is important for an individual to distinguish between their own expectations and those from their surroundings. Because to make the right decisions in a career journey, we first need to recognize our own needs, interests, and priorities.”

“As We Get to Know Ourselves, Our Desires and Priorities May Also Change”

Taşar pointed out that career goals can change over time; “A career journey does not always have to proceed according to a plan we set at the beginning. Sometimes we may experience indecision, re-evaluate our goals, or find ourselves in a different field. This does not mean we have failed. As we get to know ourselves, our desires and priorities may also change. The important thing is to be able to notice this change and not hesitate to set a new direction when necessary. Self-discovery is not a one-time completion, but a lifelong process.”

Students Re-evaluated Their Career Journeys

The Future Talks gathering offered students an opportunity to look at their career choices from the perspective of self-awareness and personal insight.

During the event, students reflected on their own interests and expectations while considering the importance of being open to change in their career journeys.
