Tarhan: 'The Most Valuable Currency is Quality!'

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Health, Culture and Sports Directorate Coordination and Bir Düşün Social and Political Club jointly organized the 'Our Founding Rector Meets with Youth' event. Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who stated that the most valuable currency is quality, made evaluations regarding the Fi-gital University concept. Tarhan emphasized that there is a seventy percent attendance requirement in education and underlined that knowledge cannot be learned without attending classes.

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan

'The Fi-gital concept became the slogan of the hybrid system'

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who started his speech by explaining the concept of Fi-gital university, said, 'We started classes with the Faculty of Medicine. We will make the classes hybrid. Within the general framework created by YÖK. We discussed this at length in the Senate, and as a result, the Fi-gital University concept emerged. We said it should be digital but a mixture of physical and digital. Thus, the Fi-gital concept became a slogan for the hybrid system. We completed the procedures for this and registered it. Digital, but we combined digital with physical. There can be distance learning, but not distance education. We will conduct laboratory and applied courses in diluted classes. We are carrying out serious and extensive work on this matter.'

Students will come with HES code!

Tarhan stated that HES codes will be used for university entries; 'We are now implementing the HES code for the university. Students will gain entry to faculties with a HES code. Individuals without a HES code pose a risk of transmission, meaning they are being monitored or are in quarantine. If a person has a HES code, students will be able to enter and exit easily. Our work on this continues. Everyone needs to get this code,' he said.

'There is a seventy percent attendance requirement in education'

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan; 'All students will be able to follow classes very comfortably. Those who do not want to follow live classes from home will also be able to join the class from any computer on campus. Since it is a live class, questions can be asked, and students can participate in the class via the chat section. Instructors will be able to send digital assignments from our own software systems. Information can be transferred from the Student Information System. The class must be one hundred and five minutes long. If it falls below this duration, the class is considered not to have taken place. There is a seventy percent attendance requirement in education,' he said.

The most important issue is not to infringe upon the rights of diligent students…

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also stated that there are ongoing efforts to eliminate the possibility of cheating in online exams. Tarhan said, 'It is important not to infringe upon the rights of successful students who study for midterm and final exams. This situation has increased with online exams. Exams are where the concept of 'rights of others' is most crucial. Those who pay attention to this will succeed in many areas in the future. When one student cheats in a class of forty, they are infringing upon the rights of others. It raises the average, and since school GPA is very important, especially when applying for master's degrees, those who cheat in these situations are committing an an injustice. Therefore, we will try to prevent this with certain methods such as screen locking and security measures in exams. The aim is to avoid open-ended questions as much as possible in exams and to ask multiple-choice questions instead,' he stated.

The most valuable currency is quality!

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that the most valuable currency is quality and that a low-quality university is like a 'shanty university', said: 'Of course, even for online classes, there is a seventy percent attendance requirement. There is no absenteeism. Our university does not want to give diplomas to those who do not deserve them; there is a moral responsibility in this. If you want to proudly say 'We are from Üsküdar Üniversitesi' when you become a professional, we need to maintain the quality here. If you ask what the most valuable currency is right now, it is quality. If there is no quality in a university, rest assured it will be like a 'shanty university'. We cannot be such a university. Knowledge cannot be learned without attending classes. Since you have entered this university, you must comply with its minimum standards,' he concluded.
