Tarhan: 'Spiritual Well-being is Needed'

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, participated as a speaker in the program organized by Özel Çekmeköy Çınar College. Making evaluations on the topic “How Does the Pandemic Affect Our Psychology?”, Tarhan pointed out that alienation, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, and hedonism are increasing globally. Tarhan, stating that narcissistic communities are forming, emphasized the need for spiritual well-being.

'The whole world is experiencing a civilization crisis'

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, mentioning that spiritual well-being is decreasing day by day while material well-being is increasing, said; 'Many syndromes have emerged worldwide. The world is on the brink of a civilization crisis. Alienation, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, and hedonism have increased. Narcissistic communities are forming. Antidepressant use is quite high in our country as well. We need spiritual well-being. There were also increasing factors after Covid-19, but material gains should not take precedence, money does not bring happiness. The world is moving to a different dimension. A civilization crisis is being experienced.' He said.

'Virtual isolation has formed among young people'

Tarhan, referring to studies on the relationship between loneliness and the brain, stated; 'The results from the studies are quite surprising; while we expect the feeling of loneliness in the elderly population, it is seen in 40% of young people aged 16-24. This is a sad situation. There is a young generation that says, 'I will live my own life, I don't want to get married, I don't want to get into debt.' They experience the feeling of loneliness for many reasons. Happiness levels are low, virtual isolation has formed among young people.' He used the expressions.

'Moral success is the entirety of life'

In the program with high participation, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that an intelligent and diligent individual would struggle to live their life without moral values, stating; 'An individual may be intelligent and wealthy but steals and is remembered for it; this is not pleasant. Being intelligent is not enough; one must be good. Children need to be educated on moral values. Positive psychology exists for this purpose and teaches moral success. A child should set their main goals, think about how they will leave their mark on life, and act accordingly. Young people lack ego ideals; they need to define them. Because moral success is the entirety of life.' He said.

'I don't think children will have learning loss in education after the pandemic'

Tarhan, pointing out that children will quickly adapt to the new situation, said; 'I don't think children will have learning loss in their education after the pandemic. On the contrary, they adapted quickly to the new situation. They will also adapt to what happens after the pandemic. As long as parents remain resolute. The most important factor here is adults. Let's turn moments of crisis into opportunities and not be pessimistic. If we look at the statistics, our society has overcome pessimism by 50% in terms of maturing during the pandemic process and turning the pandemic into an opportunity. Let's extract opportunities from all crises.' He recorded the statements.
