Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest on the program organized by Brain Design. In the program held via Zoom, Tarhan made important statements to Azerbaijani professional experts under the title of “New Truths in Education”, saying, “We want our children to be intelligent and successful. Yes, these are desired qualities in a leader, but they are not enough. In addition to being intelligent and hardworking, one more parameter is needed. That is to be a good person.”
“21st Century skills are also today’s realities”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the digitalization process accelerated further during the Coronavirus period and the whole world started to adapt to it, saying, “With digitalization and the changes Covid brought to technology, there has been a rapid change in methods. This will also cause the content of education to change, and it seems to be starting to happen. The current global education was not just value-oriented and belief-oriented. However, 21st-century skills require these. With artificial intelligence, some professions will disappear in 20-30 years. Against these professions, let's direct our children towards value-oriented, belief-oriented, social skills, music, and art-oriented subjects. If we miss the new truths in the digitized world, we will become outdated. In a way, we will fall behind in the race of civilizations. Therefore, we need to know today's reality, and 21st-century skills are also today's realities.”
“Being intelligent and hardworking is not enough, one must also be a good person…”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan spoke about the three parameters required for success. Emphasizing that these three parameters are perhaps the most important elements in education, Tarhan said; “We say we want our children to be intelligent and successful at school. These are qualities sought in a leader. Everyone is their own leader. One who cannot be a leader of themselves cannot be the leader of a family or a class. A person is a leader if they can manage their own desires and impulses. A person is hardworking and intelligent during their student life, graduates as an engineer, and is equally hardworking and intelligent in their professional life. But then, to get rich easily, they produce synthetic marijuana. This means that in addition to being intelligent and hardworking, one more parameter is needed. That parameter is: being a good person. Young people will be successful if they are intelligent, hardworking, and good people. This is the diagram of success. If we want success, we must definitely include the third parameter. This is perhaps the most important of the truths in education.”
The reason people become substance addicts is loneliness and insecurity!
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that one of the 21st-century skills is social skills. Tarhan emphasized that if these skills are not given to people, they could become substance addicts, saying; “Social skills are one of the 21st Century skills. Humans are such beings that their need for social connection must be met. The reason why substance addicts are so is that they are left alone in life and do not feel safe. Because they do not feel safe, they deceive themselves with drugs. Therefore, social skill is very important. Currently, as a 21st Century skill, it is necessary to teach this to students and people. In this regard, we are lucky as Turkey. Because we are a society with warm social relationships. That's why our job is easier.”
