Students' guide 'Science of Happiness' is on the shelves…

An important work from Üsküdar University. With the support of Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan and Üsküdar University academics, the work titled “Science of Happiness, Positive Psychology Applications for Youth” has been published by Üsküdar University Publications. The supplementary textbook, prepared by Lecturer Elif Konar Özkan according to the general rules of the MEB curriculum, is copyrighted by 22 psychology professional authors and consists of 19 units. Completed in 5 years, the work also serves as a guide for psychological counselors and guidance teachers.

The introductory text for the book, edited by Fatma Özten and published by Üsküdar University Publications, was penned by Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan. Tarhan emphasized that the book addresses the relationship between happiness and the science of psychology from a holistic perspective, stating that it is a serious reference book that will serve as a supplementary resource for students.

It will show the ways to achieve psychological resilience!

Prof. Dr. Tarhan; “The Science of Happiness is a scientific endeavor that seeks to contribute to our mental health, which is deteriorating in today's age where humanity experiences an era of pleasure and speed. If the goal is "happiness" on humanity's journey to eternity, then the method is scientific methodology. The Science of Happiness primarily suggests self-knowledge, in other words, conducting a 'SWOT analysis' on oneself. That is, 'Our Strengths-Weaknesses', 'Our Opportunities' and 'Our Threats', and then it shows us the ways to achieve psychological resilience by choosing and strengthening our strong points. Theoretically, our weak points, our 'psychological immune system,' improve naturally when strengthened. In fact, this methodology can also be defined as the scientific presentation of values-based education. Sharing, gratitude, altruism (i.e., empathy), forgiveness, anger control, stress management, internal and external motivation, search for meaning, etc., are taught through psychodramas and/or small games. In developed countries, we can see that these lessons are taught without exception in primary school, high school, and university, sometimes as electives and sometimes as compulsory, and their applications are supported as social policy. Our children also need 'Mindfulness' (Turkish equivalent 'conscious awareness') training, in line with our own high values. When you examine the book, it will be seen that this education is a re-structuring of our national culture and Anatolian wisdom within a scientific concept. When we consider that it is necessary to modernize while preserving our culture and that 'we cannot be universal without being local,' it would be appropriate to remind that the roots of this branch of science are in Anatolia.” he said.

The book, prepared in accordance with MEB standards, will also be a guide for teachers

Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “The work has been prepared in accordance with MEB standards within the framework of supplementary textbook rules. The study is copyrighted by twenty-two psychology professional authors and consists of 19 units. The preparation of the book took five years. It is completely original in nature. The applications have been developed to be suitable for early adolescence and adolescence. When we consider that it will primarily facilitate the work of our Psychological Counselors and Guidance Teachers, being able to reach future generations will be our greatest honor and gain. I wish you enjoyable reading and applications.”
