An Interview on "Storyboard" Held at Üsküdar Communication

In the seminar organized by the Visual Communication Design Department of Üsküdar Üniversitesi, the topic of "Storyboard", which is the basis of animation within the context of the communication sector, was discussed. The guest of the program, moderated by Head of Visual Communication Design Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. And Algül, was Pixelate Creative Illustrator Seval Şeker. Stating that Storyboard is the foundation of animation, Şeker said, "After becoming an art teacher, while wondering if I could do this job in agencies, I turned to the field of animation. The basis of this is the use of Storyboard. I recommend young people who want to do this job to work with a drawing tablet to adapt their hand muscles."

"The basis of animation is the use of storyboard"

Providing information about the use of animation and Storyboard, Seval Şeker said, "My path crossed with animation when I transitioned from being an art teacher to working in agencies." Şeker, who stated that she had no knowledge of animation when she graduated from university, said; "First, I started this adventure with art teaching. When I graduated from university, I didn't know such a field existed. Afterwards, while wondering if I could do this job in agencies, I turned to the field of animation. The basis of this is the use of Storyboard. If I were to explain this area a bit, you can look at website illustrations on Behance. Actually, there is no difference between an icon and an illustration. What we do are illustrative icons. The process is as follows: A brief comes to the agency, it is evaluated by the project manager, and presented to us, and from there we move on to the mood board. That is, we derive a 'wheel' from this brief we receive; these can be colors or things it tells us. What does the client want and what can we provide? First, we create its mood board, what kind of flow it will have, which, of course, comes from the copywriter. As an illustrator, which parts need to be highlighted, what does this tell us, we create a mood board based on these."

"A film project can be prepared by working at a desk with a Storyboard"

Providing information about the promotion process of a project, Şeker touched upon the use of storyboard. Şeker; "In storyboards for a film, commercial film, or animation we will shoot, we actually try to construct the camera angles with an artist's eye. We plan in our minds the work that many people would do together. We can solve all this film effort at a desk without expending it. A storyboard, as a finished work, is not something that everyone must understand. Sometimes there can be storyboards that only the artist themselves can understand. But if this storyboard is not only to be used for animation, but also for a commercial film, it needs to be simple, plain drawings that the director can understand. We actually don't start with a storyboard; we start with a mind map and mood board. In the mind map, we only look at the text to see which parts of the general storyboard the project brings to mind we will focus on. Then, we simply construct how the frames will look in a way the other party can understand, and after revisions with the client, the work reaches its final stage."

"Those who want to do animation can adapt their hand muscles with a drawing tablet"

Stating that those who want to do animation can adapt their hand muscles with a drawing tablet, Şeker made explanations about the process; "Before starting every job, there is a week we call Case Study. Especially for drawing even the elements in the Storyboard we will use. We can easily access these on Behance by typing 'animation' in the search bar and filtering by 'recent' in the popularity section. I think someone in this industry is probably always on Behance, Dribble, Pinterest. My biggest advice to young friends is that if you want to get into this job, you definitely need to have a drawing tablet to adapt your hand muscles for this work. This drawing tablet doesn't necessarily have to be a specific brand; I started with a Wacom tablet. Wacom's tablets for students are quite ideal for this job. My biggest advice to friends is to follow designers, especially in Turkey, on Behance; they are producing very beautiful works recently."
