Üsküdar University Psychology Department Dr. Faculty Member Meltem Narter made statements about social psychology.
What is social psychology?
Dr. Faculty Member Meltem Narter defined social psychology as “a psychologically-oriented and socially-qualified branch of science that investigates individuals' relationships with interpersonal and social environments, their social experiences and behaviors, the qualities of group membership, or the effects of being within a society on an individual's attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs.”
Why is social psychology important?
Dr. Narter stated that social psychology is important because it investigates how individuals realize the state of being social, which they possess as a product of nature and need:
“The differences between socialization and societalization, the rules of socialization, societal norms—all these are important in terms of their effects on shaping individual behavior and in people's attempts to understand the formation of society and the rules for determining norms.”
Interdisciplinary cooperation is important in social psychology
Pointing to the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation in social psychology, Dr. Meltem Narter said, “Social psychology is an important crossroads in interdisciplinary studies for human biological structure, socialization skills, the desire to form a society, the creation of culture, and the effort to maintain this cultural structure. It must be in cooperation with all social sciences that are products of humanity.”
