"SKS ÜNİ LIFE" magazine's first issue meets readers in 2 languages
The first issue of “SKS ÜNİ LIFE” magazine, planned by SKS to be published quarterly in two languages, Turkish and English, has been released digitally. The Editor-in-Chief of the magazine is Özcan Demir, Head of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Health, Culture and Sports Department. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also penned a special article for the first issue of the magazine.
In his article for the first issue of the magazine, Tarhan states;
A sound mind in a sound body!
“The new information neuroscience offers us is that the human body is the state and the human brain is the government. In other words, mental health is both the cause and determinant of physical health. One who operates their brain well manages their body well. Sports and physical exercises are areas that positively impact our mental health. For humans, who are coded to move, sports are also used as a method to reduce stress.
The effect of movement in reducing heart disease and some other illnesses is well-known. Regular and measured exercise, in addition to physical health, is known for its contribution to emotional release, tranquility, relaxation, and mental unwinding. It is considered part of occupational therapy.
Sports or other exercises, if enjoyed without competing with someone or oneself, contribute greatly to one's mental and physical health. The feeling of vigor and liveliness at the end of a sport indicates its benefits.
Western scientists are conducting large research projects to make people both rich and happy. For example, Dr. William Rosenblatt, Director of the Morrishtown Stress Diagnosis and Treatment Center in the USA, in his work summarizing the results of extensive research, showed us: “Married people are exposed to less stress than singles, those who eat a balanced diet less than those with eating disorders, non-drinkers and non-smokers less than addicts and alcoholics, and active people less than sedentary people.”
Personality and character strength are very important in sports
Strong personality and character are important in sports. We know that behind sporting successes lies a great deal of effort and endeavor. In sports, it's always said, ‘A sound mind in a sound body,’ but we can actually state that the opposite is also true: ‘A sound body is found in a sound mind.’ Someone with an unsound mind cannot succeed in sports. It is quite possible to show hundreds of examples of this. Whichever successful sports field you look at, whether individual or team, that athlete or team is seen to have a sound mind. I must also say that the same principle applies to Üsküdar Üniversitesi's achievements in sports.
Therefore, in sports, the strength of personality and character is crucial. Team spirit is also… Being able to get excited about the same thing and react in the same way is equally important.
Once, we met with officials from the National Team within the scope of a study. We brainstormed how to provide focus training to athletes. We debated extensively that athletes are negatively affected by bad cheers and rhetoric, causing their focus to scatter. Here, in such situations, it's important for an individual to lock onto their goal, and this only happens when they infuse their emotions into their work. Playing solely with logic is one thing; performing an activity by imbuing it with high value and meaning is very different. The feeling of being national, one's love for their country, is very influential.
If there is no sustainable character, success will not last!
The benefits of sports to one's character are also undeniable. A strong character in an athlete is important for the continuity of success. If a person does not have a sustainable character trait, successes will be fleeting, like a flash in the pan. My biggest advice to those involved in sports, whether professional, hobbyist, or for health purposes, is that for success to be lasting, it is very important that you combine the endurance training, goal-setting, purpose determination, and ability to give meaning to sports that you learn here.
While wishing the first issue of our SKS ÜNİ LIFE magazine to bring good fortune to our university, I would like to reiterate once again that I wholeheartedly support all sports branches, our athletes, and our dedicated managers in sports at Üsküdar Üniversitesi.
Stay healthy, stay with sports…”
