The second day of the 'Bi’Şey Yapmalı' Symposium was hosted by Üsküdar

In cooperation with Üsküdar University Psychology Club and İstinye University Psychology Club, the 'Bi’Şey Yapmalı Symposium' was organized. Many topics, from social issues to environmental problems, were discussed at the symposium. Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who delivered the opening speech for the 2nd Day session of the symposium, noted that the phrase 'Bi’Şey Yapmalı' (Something must be done) is unique to humans, and no other living creature besides humans can think or say it.

The second-day session of the 'Bi’Şey Yapmalı Symposium', held with the aim of doing something for the environment, society, and humanity, took place at the Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall, hosted by Üsküdar University.

Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir: “Books were the milestones of my life journey”

Firstly, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özdemir, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, took the stage. Özdemir, highlighting that there are many choices in life and a path is walked in line with these choices, touched upon the choices he made as a student. Emphasizing the importance of self-improvement based on these choices, Özdemir said; “When I came to the city to study middle school in 1968, I decided that I had to do something. Because I had many options. I could have turned to bad habits like my other friends. I chose the book as my first preference. Books were a harbor for me; I lived in books and loved the people in books more than those on the street. Books were my private garden. Books were the milestones of my life journey. I want you to know Cemil Meriç. Because at one stage of his life, he lost both his eyes. Despite this, he left us a world of books. Books, like all lovers, are jealous and detach one from reality. They detach us from reality, but isn't that the true reality?”

Özdemir: “Cooperation between Üsküdar University and İstinye University is very important”

Emphasizing the importance of cooperation between Üsküdar University and İstinye University, Özdemir said; “We hope that every event and every speech organized here becomes a companion on your journey. May it be a lesson for you. Therefore, let's continue these types of events. As a university, we will always continue to do so. I once again congratulate each and every one of my colleagues from the Psychology Department at Üsküdar University who organized this event. I greet you all with respect and love.”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “To 'Do Something' is a human trait”

Subsequently, Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who took the stage, drew attention to the human-centric emphasis of the 'Bi’Şey Yapmalı Symposium' event.  Tarhan said; “The phrase ‘Bi’Şey Yapmalı’ (Something must be done) is unique to humans. That is, no living creature other than humans says this. In the fantasy world of a cat, a dog, or any other living creature, there is only food. For living creatures other than humans, life is about eating, drinking, reproducing, nourishing, and sheltering.  But humans are not like that. The ability for abstract thought is found only in humans. Humans think conceptually, abstractly, and symbolically, and they also produce thoughts. Another feature found only in humans is imagination. After imagining something, our brain perceives that imagined thing as a need. After feeling the need, a desire awakens. In the final stage, action is taken. This requires motivation. In innovation, there is a 15 percent rule. According to the 15 percent rule, if a person is working on a task for 10 hours, they should spend 1.5 hours imagining and thinking about that task. If they do this, they will have actually worked on the philosophy of their work. In this way, they will have revised themselves.”

“The wisest method is to benefit from the experiences of others”

Tarhan, pointing out that life is too short to gain experience through trial and error, stated that the wisest method is to benefit from the experiences of others. Tarhan; “The book ‘The Trap of Intelligence’ is an interesting book that can change young people's perspectives. The wisest method is to benefit from the experiences of others. Neither our time nor our lives are suitable for gaining experience through trial and error. Therefore, benefiting from the experiences of others is the shortest path. As Mevlana said, 'One of your legs should be like a compass.' If one leg is on the ground and one is in the air, you can easily reach your ideals without losing touch with reality. As you do this, you will undoubtedly do great things. Your generation is luckier than ours. Don't be pessimistic. The world is getting better, not worse. Wars that began during a period when winds of freedom were offered, the value of humanity was so well understood, and human values were discovered, ended before escalating. If this event had occurred in the 1930s-1940s, it would have turned into a world war. Society and social media were the biggest preventers of these wars. Success comes with those who can be a team. Individual geniuses are not successful. Team geniuses are successful. For this reason, I congratulate our clubs organizing the symposium for their teamwork.” He concluded his words with these statements.

Following the opening speeches, Psychologist Dr. Sinem Durusal gave a presentation on 'The Grieving Process', and Üsküdar University Rector's Advisor Prof. Dr. Sırrı Akbaba shared insights on 'Our Lost Values'.

Within the scope of the symposium, Clinical Psychologist Specialist Özgenur Taşkın made evaluations on 'Learned Helplessness', and Psychological Counselor Specialist Ece Özel on 'Sexual Therapy'.

At the symposium, Clinical Psychologist/Psikoterapist Ömer Yurtsever spoke on 'Suppressed Emotions', and Psychologist Servet Aşan spoke under the title 'Professional Law'.
