Safe Work at Height in Construction Addressed

The “Safe Work at Height in Construction” event was organized by Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services Occupational Health and Safety Program. The event, which discussed the importance of safety in working at height, emphasized the necessity of both technical and practical knowledge. In addition to this knowledge, the importance of communication skills was also highlighted.  

The event was held at Üsküdar University Çarşı Campus Yuşa Amphitheater.

Emre Şengün, Class B Occupational Safety Specialist from CCIS Turkey, and Oğuzhan Çakır, Class B Occupational Safety Specialist from Alımak Group, were guests at the event.

The event was moderated by Dr. Lecturer Gamze Kağan, Head of the Occupational Health and Safety Program at Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services. 

Oğuzhan Çakır: “Working at height requires both technical knowledge and practical training”

Occupational Safety Specialist Oğuzhan Çakır drew attention to the importance of safety in working at height. Çakır said; “A separate associate degree program on working at height should be opened in universities. Because this field requires both technical knowledge and practical training.”

Çakır stated that this issue is not taken seriously enough in society, saying; “For people harvesting hazelnuts in the Black Sea region, 3 meters is not considered high, but this idea is very dangerous. Every height requires attention and precaution.” 

Çakır conveyed the risks of working at height and the precautions that need to be taken in detail to the students, emphasizing the need to increase awareness on this issue.

Emre Şengün: “A strong communication skill is needed as much as technical knowledge”

Occupational Safety Specialist Emre Şengün emphasized the importance of safety in working at height. Şengün stated that this issue should be addressed academically and find more place in educational programs.

Stating, “In occupational safety expertise, a strong communication skill is needed as much as technical knowledge,” Şengün emphasized that persuasion, mutual dialogue, and effective communication are vital in this profession. Şengün said, “Ensuring people adopt and implement correct safety measures is not only about setting rules, but also about being able to explain why they should apply these rules.”

Şengün also stated that occupational safety specialists are not just technical experts, but also guides and communication bridges. 

The event concluded after certificates of appreciation were presented to the participants.
