One of Turkey’s leading psychiatry specialists, world-renowned therapist Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zihni Sungur, has started giving lectures at Üsküdar University.

Prof. Dr. Sungur, who has achieved countless successes nationally and internationally, is meeting with students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Psychology (English) Department, sharing his years of experience with aspiring psychologists.

A career crowned with international successes

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zihni Sungur, known for his expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, Couple and Sex Therapies, is recognized as one of Turkey's most respected names in psychiatry. Sungur, who served as president of the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT), also holds the distinction of being the first president of the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy (IACP) elected from outside the USA. Honored with the 'Gold Medal' award by the European Federation of Sexology, Sungur holds an important place in the international psychotherapy community.

Shares his scientific and clinical experience at Üsküdar

Prof. Dr. Sungur, who served as a faculty member in the Medical Faculties of various universities for many years and pioneered many innovations in psychotherapy, aims to offer students a combination of scientific knowledge and clinical experience in his new role at Üsküdar University.

Prof. Dr. Sungur, who has carried out pioneering work towards establishing a common language in psychotherapy, introducing cognitive therapy in Turkey, and raising education standards, is also a founding member and certified supervisor of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research.

Students of Üsküdar University will not only learn psychology under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zihni Sungur; they will also have the opportunity to experience the ethical, scientific, and humanistic depth of psychotherapy.

Who is Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sungur?

He graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982. While specializing in the Department of Psychiatry at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Psychiatry and Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals in London between 1985 and 1988. He received the title of Psychiatry Specialist in 1990 and Associate Professor of Psychiatry in 1992. After his associate professorship, he focused his work especially on “Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies”, “Sexual Dysfunctions and Sexual Therapies”, “Marriage Therapies”, and “Anxiety Disorders”, becoming the Founding President of the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies in 1996, and a founding member of the Association for Sexual Education, Treatment and Research in 1998, as well as the coordinator of the Turkish Psychiatric Association's Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapies working unit. He currently serves as the president of the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies and the coordinator of the Turkish Psychiatric Association's Family and Couple Therapies working unit. In 1998, a project he prepared with his colleagues for the treatment and reintegration of schizophrenia patients into society received an international award (Lilly Schizophrenia Reintegration Award). In the same year, he received the 1998 Nusret Fişek Public Health Service Award for his contributions to health services and education-treatment activities carried out as a member of the National Smoking and Health Committee. In 2000, he was elected president of the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT). Mehmet Zihni Sungur, who became a professor in 2001, served as a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine.

Mehmet Sungur has been accredited as a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist by the UK Council for Psychotherapy and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies and included in the list of registered therapists. He currently serves as an Executive member of the Accreditation and Certification Committee of the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT), an executive board member of the committees for 'Common Language Use in Psychotherapies', a Board Member of the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy (IACP), a member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and is a founding member, trainer, and consultant of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research (ACT), holding supervisor titles from ACT.
