An event titled “Conscious and Safe Digital World - Cybersecurity” was held by the Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Cyber Security Expert Ömer Yerlikaya was a guest at the event. Yerlikaya, drawing attention to the increasing cybercrimes in the digital world, emphasized the need to take precautions to protect against these crimes. Yerlikaya also added and warned that ‘dumpster diving’ techniques hold an important place among scammers' information gathering methods.

The event was held at Üsküdar University South Campus E Block Socrates Hall.
Cyber Security Expert Ömer Yerlikaya began his speech by introducing the SİBERAY project. Yerlikaya, drawing attention to the risks posed by increasing cybercrimes at individual and societal levels with the rapid development of the digital world, provided information on the processes carried out in the formation of crime and stated that extensive studies are being conducted in this field.

Precautions must be taken to protect against cybercrimes
Yerlikaya stated that crime incidents have occurred in the cyber environment in recent years, and crimes committed through online shopping and websites are becoming increasingly common. Yerlikaya noted that individuals should take various precautions to protect themselves against cybercrimes, emphasizing the importance of creating strong passwords and being vigilant against digital scammers.
Increasing digital literacy is a significant step in preventing cybercrimes…
Yerlikaya also pointed out that cyberattacks pose serious threats not only at the individual level but also at institutional and national security levels. He emphasized that institutions should keep their firewalls updated and raise awareness among their employees on this issue. Furthermore, he stated that increasing digital literacy in society could be an important step in preventing cybercrimes.
Take precautions against cyber attackers' dumpster diving techniques!
Yerlikaya stated that ‘dumpster diving’ techniques hold an important place among scammers' information gathering methods; “Cyber attackers evaluate every detail to reach their targets. For example, they can access your identity information from an un-shredded invoice thrown in the trash. Using this information, they gain access to companies' admin panels, and then take over the system using the brute force method. Always securely destroy documents in your trash. Especially do not dispose of your Turkish ID (T.C.) numbers written on shipping boxes openly. Such oversights can lead to serious consequences.” he said.
Do not fall for phone scammers
Warning citizens against phone scams, Yerlikaya emphasized that elderly individuals are particularly victimized by this method. Yerlikaya said; “Law enforcement agencies never ask you for money. Scammers may call you and demand money by frightening you with a serious situation like a terrorism investigation. In such cases, always verify the caller's identity and end the call in suspicious situations. We struggle to raise awareness among our elderly individuals on this matter. There are many victims who have lost their money or gold to scammers. Be careful and always make it a habit to verify to prevent yourself and your loved ones from falling into such traps.”
The event concluded after answering participants' questions and presenting certificates of appreciation.
