Communication students, who were deemed worthy of awards and achieved success in the 32nd Young Communicators Competition organized this year by the Turkish Journalists' Association and Aydın Doğan Foundation, met with Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan. Congratulating the students and their advisor faculty, Tarhan stated that they made their mark on the Oscars of communication.
The meeting held in the Senate hall was attended by Üsküdar Üniversitesi Secretary General Selçuk Uysaler and Head of Corporate Communications Tahsin Aksu, as well as Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, Faculty of Communication Journalism Department Head Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, Prof. Dr. And Algül, Dr. Lecturer Nihal Toros, Research Assistant Selin Maden, Research Assistant Atila Erdemir, and other academics also accompanied the students.
“Doing beautiful things is your responsibility, appreciation and encouragement is ours”
While students sharing their awards and works with Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan expressed their happiness, Tarhan congratulated the students with these words; “First, I congratulate all the young people, in the person of my professors Nazife, Süleyman, and other faculty. Thank you, they represented our university very well there. We know that you achieved this with great effort through such qualified work. We said, let's not just congratulate virtually from screen to screen, but wholeheartedly from person to person. It will be better to meet and talk with our young friends face-to-face. It is important to continue the same excitement we started with new teams every year. Our ancestors had a beautiful saying: ‘skill is subject to praise’. What we call skill is ability. Ability is subject to praise, and praise is an award, a gift. That is, for a person's talents to develop, for skill to turn into talent, for it to emerge, it needs a kind of appreciation, praise, approval. It needs to be encouraged with praise. So, doing beautiful things is your concern, but seeing them and us appreciating and encouraging them is our responsibility. Hopefully, it will continue this way.” he said.
“Consciously learn all experiences from all sectors”
Tarhan gave advice to young communicators by giving examples from his book 'Being a Conscious Young Person'; “In this book, 'Being a Conscious Young Person,' there is a way of learning life through trial and error. It is necessary to consciously learn all experiences from all sectors. That is the smartest learning method. It is to benefit from the experiences of others. An average person learns by trial and error, which is very difficult, their life isn't long enough. Therefore, think of me as your senior travel companion; we are learning life together. I am sharing my experiences with you, but what's important is to view life like a fellow traveler. In other words, I tried not to present it like a teacher-student relationship. We are learning together, I hope you read it.” he said.
“Awards are definitely beneficial to students”
Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör pointed out that communication students work diligently and that projects and awards are definitely beneficial in their lives. Güngör; “Also, you'll notice that these (awards) have been coming from the journalism department for the past few years. Professor Süleyman takes a personal interest. Our journalism department assistants Atilla and Sevim take a personal interest. Therefore, we are consistently the highest in number among a few foundation universities. Now, even among state universities, only 1 or 2 universities can surpass us. This year, we are in 2nd place. Professor Nihal will now be one of our established, consistent award advisors. She definitely helps students win an award. So these are good things. Visual communication was added to the list for the first time this year. With Professor And, there has been an impetus there as well. Next year, we probably expect performance from animation too.” she stated.
Faculty of Communication Journalism Department Head Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan also stated that he was proud of the students and that their work would continue successfully.
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan gifted his signed books ‘Society Psychology, Wisdom Psychology 1, and Wisdom Psychology 2’ to the award-winning students and their academic advisors from the Faculty of Communication.
The visit concluded with a group photo of the Faculty of Communication academics and the award-winning Communication students.
