Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “We should also teach our children moral success”

Uskudar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, participated as a speaker at the Alpha Psychology Summit. Tarhan met with professionals of his profession under the title “21st Century Family Values and New Truths in the Family.” Tarhan said; “The philosophy of life in the individual and family is very important. In our education system, parents are focused on academic success. We should also teach our children moral success as a philosophy of life.”

“Human life is like a chain; it breaks where it's weakest”

Tarhan stated that crises are like a chain, and breaks occur at the weakest link; “In this period, we faced the Covid-19 pandemic. Problems such as less economic prosperity, more poverty, less psychological well-being, greater income inequality, fewer social relations, and more fear of death emerged. So, what awaits us in the post-pandemic period?  For example, a Ministry of Loneliness has been established in England, and the Minister of Development has been appointed as the Minister of Loneliness. There is a rule for crises; a crisis is like a chain. The strongest part of the chain is its weakest link. When the chain is stretched, breaks occur there. Human life is also like a chain. In a crisis, during tension, it breaks where it is weakest. If the economy is weak, it breaks there; if social life is weak, it breaks there. These are where the breaks will emerge. This is an expected situation in the post-pandemic period.” he stated.

“We should also teach our children moral success as a philosophy of life”

In the program, which garnered significant interest, Tarhan drew attention to the importance of the philosophy of life for individuals and families; “The philosophy of life in the individual and family is very important. What should we pay attention to when raising children? We should give importance to this. In our education system, parents are focused on academic success. Parents say, 'It's enough if my child is smart and hardworking.' Now, a child becomes smart, but after graduation, they become ambitious, insatiable, or lack various moral criteria. They go on to piracy and end up in jail. What is this? Smart, hardworking, but life success is not good. For someone to be both smart and have good life success, there must be academic success plus moral success, which is life success. We must also teach our children moral success as a philosophy of life. We need to teach criteria for good and bad. For this, we need to make positive adjustments to our minds.” he said.

“If a person cannot manage their desires and impulses, they cannot manage life either”

“If a person is not their own leader, if they cannot manage their own desires and impulses, that person cannot manage others either. They cannot manage society or life. People say we must have power to control life. This is referred to as monetary and economic power. However, internal powers are more important to control life. Internal control is more important.” he noted.
