Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “If there is no opposition in a home, there is no democratic functioning”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest at the program titled “Youth Festival Face-to-Face with Youth,” organized by the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education within the scope of May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Meeting with young people under the title ‘Being a Conscious Youth,’ Tarhan drew attention to the importance of democratic functioning within the family. Tarhan said, “Democracy is sacred because there is opposition; therefore, if there is no opposition in a home, there is no democracy.”

“A world independent of time and space is beginning”

In the meeting moderated by Fatma Kevser Sümer, Tarhan drew attention to the democratic functioning within the family; “Democracy is sacred because there is opposition; therefore, if there is no opposition in a home, and parents say ‘What I say goes,’ then there is no democratic functioning in that home. Where there is no democratic functioning, there is autocracy. That’s why our university’s first motto is criticizability, and the second is libertarianism. The frontal lobe of our brain works like a simulator. The universe is a simulation; for example, the future is currently in quantum. Current computers will soon become obsolete. A world independent of time and space is beginning. A metaphysical world, beyond physics, is emerging before us,” he said.

“Mistakes are also a part of perfection”

Tarhan, who emphasized that mistakes are also a part of perfection, said; “Sufi culture leads us to the truth. Life is not just about this worldly life; we are heading towards eternity. Therefore, evils, misfortunes, and mistakes are also a part of perfection. Being a conscious youth requires considering these as well. To motivate ourselves, we need to set goals. There are three fundamental pillars of motivation in a person. The first is setting a goal, the second is awakening desire, and the third is taking action. A person without a goal cannot motivate themselves. Our brain has a working system; for instance, it programs itself. If you go to bed believing, ‘I will definitely wake up at 4 tomorrow,’ you don’t need to set an alarm; you’ll wake up instantly. This is dependent on our brain’s programming authority; other living beings don’t have this genetically; it’s only present in humans—this free-thinking ability, our skill to program our own minds. Humans have a gene for seeking novelty. Humans don’t build their homes the same way they did a thousand years ago, but a spider or an ant builds its home the same way it did a thousand years ago. This means humans have a gene for seeking meaning, and these are called supra-mental genes.” he stated.
