Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “First, we will succeed in managing ourselves”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan met with district governor candidates once again. Speaking on “New Truths in the Family” to district governors preparing for duty in various regions of Turkey within the scope of the Ankara District Governorship Course Vision Training Program, Tarhan said; “As parents in the family, we will first succeed in managing ourselves, then we will get to know ourselves, develop social awareness, understand the feelings of the other party, and learn to manage relationships healthily.”

“The most important thing in leadership is being able to make the right decision”

Tarhan stated that the psychological dimension of leadership is often neglected; “However, when we talk about leadership, we are talking about managing others. Now there is a scientific leadership. You start management with yourself. This is called neuroleadership. A person who cannot manage themselves, their own desires and impulses, cannot manage others. This also has an equivalent in positive psychology. If a person has neuroleadership, they can manage their desires in the brain, their benevolent emotions on one hand, and their malevolent impulses and emotions in the brain on the other. The frontal lobe is the brain's front region, the control simulator. When we make a decision, we look at the past and the future, then we try to make the most important decision. The most important thing in leadership, the first step, is being able to make the right decision. This also applies in the family.”

“We don’t know how to train the frontal region of our brain”

Tarhan stated that hedonism has become a life philosophy; “Currently, hedonism is foreseen as a philosophy of life. There is only worldly life, no life other than this world. There is a philosophy of life that says creative activity, freedom, selfishness, and the pursuit of pleasure in humans are achieved by chasing pleasure. This hedonism has turned the Western world into a society pursuing pleasure and speed. Past generations are now managing with cultural transmissions, but in 30 years, the global society will be one we cannot foresee at all. Narcissism and selfishness will become personality traits. Narcissistic individuals place themselves at the center, admire themselves, and sanctify their own egos. In Manhattan, America, antidepressants have become measurable in sewage. Antidepressant use is like bread and butter. So, why are these happening? We don’t know how to train the frontal region of our brain. Without the frontal region of our brain, there would be no morality or civilization. The frontal region is the brain's captain's bridge, and it is largest in humans among all living beings,” he said.

“First, we will succeed in managing ourselves”

Referring to the steps that need to be followed to make healthy decisions, Tarhan said; “As parents in the family, we will first succeed in managing ourselves, and then we will take the first step: self-awareness, getting to know ourselves. The second step is self-management, managing ourselves. The third step is social awareness, emotional literacy, empathy, trying to understand the feelings of the other party. The fourth is relationship management; if we manage relationships healthily, we will make decisions closest to the right ones both in the family and in society.”
