Prof. Dr. Tarhan: “Digitalization is an opportunity, not a threat”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan participated in the training organized by the Independent Student Platform. Evaluating the topic 'New Truths in Education', Tarhan pointed out that the internet should be a tool, not an end in itself. Tarhan stated; 'We should be the subject, not the object, of the internet. Digitalization is an opportunity, not a threat. If used correctly, it turns into an opportunity; if used incorrectly, it becomes a threat.'

“The most ideal learning is learning where all 5 senses are involved”

Evaluating ‘New Truths in Education’ in the online program, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “When we talk about new truths in education, it would be more accurate to speak of a changing world and education. There are 21st-century skills in education. If we know these skills, we can compare the old and the new. The 21st-century learning model is a learning-by-doing model. Learning by experience, especially here, neuroscience, the emergence of neuroscience, has caused very revolutionary, serious changes. It started with studies on ‘How does the human brain learn?’ As a result of these studies, it became clear that there is a learning pyramid for the human brain’s learning, from bottom to top. At the very bottom, learning occurs by someone explaining, which is temporary learning. When you repeat it, it becomes a little more permanent. Then you dismantle and reassemble it, which reinforces it a bit more, and the learning pyramid strengthens. Finally, you learn when you teach others, meaning you learn while teaching. The most ideal learning is learning by experiencing something; it is learning where all 5 senses are involved.”

“The biggest reason for polarization is the absence of love-based justice”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who spoke about polarization and partisanship, also explained ways to overcome them. Tarhan stated; “The biggest reason for polarization is the absence of love-based justice. There is no polarization in families open to criticism. Criticism is a gift; if criticism is based on a just foundation, one sees their mistakes and develops themselves. The most important primary reason for polarization and partisanship is the existence of power-oriented systems, not justice-oriented systems. Secondly, this power should reside in laws and rules, not in individuals. If a person feels themselves in a regulated environment, they feel secure; when they feel secure, polarization or tension decreases. Where there is justice, trust is built among people. When trust is built, fear decreases, and when fear decreases, there is no polarization. A feeling that no injustice will be done to me is formed. The cause of the disease of partisanship is discrimination, the absence of a sense of justice. What distinguishes developed countries from underdeveloped countries is not buildings and skyscrapers, but the presence or absence of law.”

“Fear, which is necessary to protect life, turns into torture when its dose is exceeded”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that remaining in a defensive posture prevents development and what needs to be done to overcome this. He stated; “Staying on the defensive shows that a person makes decisions in life based on fears, not facts. Fear is necessary and beneficial to protect life, but when you exceed its dose, it turns into torture. The important thing is to manage fear appropriately and correctly. People who act out of fear deviate from their goals and objectives, always remaining in a defensive state.”

“The Internet should be a tool, not an end in itself”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluating digitalization in education, said; “We can use the internet for our ideals, we can use the internet for our personal goals, but here the internet should be a tool, not an end in itself. We should be the subject, not the object, of the internet. If we do this in the digital world, it will lead us to our goals like nuclear energy; if we become its slave, it will explode in our hands. Digitalization is an opportunity, not a threat. If used correctly, it turns into an opportunity; if used incorrectly, it becomes a threat.”
