Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy answered! Does crime increase during a full moon?

Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University, who participated in a talk at the 13th Kocaeli Book Fair held this year in Kocaeli, objected to claims that crime rates increase on full moon nights, stating, "I have police students, and I ask them if crime increases during a full moon. They all say it does, but there is no such thing in statistics anywhere. No police unit increases its patrol count just because there's a full moon. Go out during a full moon without any fear. Walk around comfortably."

EXPLAINED THE FULL MOON-CRIME RELATIONSHIP

According to the news reported by DHA, academician and writer Prof. Dr. Sevil Atasoy, who was awarded the scientist of the year prize for her contributions to crime scene investigation, the development of forensic laboratories, and DNA evidence in Turkey, explained the full moon-crime relationship with scientific data in a talk titled 'Does Crime Increase During a Full Moon?'.

Atasoy stated that the full moon has been the subject of various legends, saying, "Scientists have been saying for centuries that the sky affects people. Hippocrates said that physicians who do not know the phases of the stars should not treat patients. Again, scientists are divided on whether the moon's phases increase crime rates. On the other hand, the werewolf legend has also captivated the whole world when it comes to the full moon. It has been argued that werewolves are a kind of creature that emerges."

"MY POLICE STUDENTS SAY IT INCREASES"

"I have police students, and I ask them if crime increases during a full moon. They all say it does, but there is no such thing in statistics anywhere."

"GO OUT WITHOUT FEAR"

"No police unit increases its patrol count just because there's a full moon. Go out during a full moon without any fear. Walk around comfortably," she said.
