Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, evaluating the effects of 5G technology on health and security, said, “The human body is also an electromagnetic system. Just as devices affect each other, the human body is also affected by the electromagnetic waves around it.”

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker added, “With 5G technology, billions of devices will connect to the internet. All systems will become integrated. Thus, a person anywhere in the world, someone you don't know at all, can send you malicious messages or launch digital attacks.”

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, Head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi, evaluated the effects of 5G technology on health and security.

Non-ionizing radiation can lead to serious long-term health problems

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker stated that radiation is divided into nuclear radiation and non-ionizing radiation. He explained that nuclear radiation has very high energy and can be instantly fatal upon contact with the human body, while non-ionizing radiation, due to its lower energy level, does not directly damage cell structure but can lead to serious long-term health problems.

Multiple antenna system is used in 5G technology

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker noted that 5G technology is not a phone but a platform. He said, “While 4G phones have a single antenna, 5G technology uses a multiple antenna system (Multiple In, Multiple Out - MIMO). This system was developed not only for phones but to connect all electronic devices in the world. The biggest difference of 5G is that it emits a higher level of radiation due to the use of many more antennas. It has not been officially announced how much power cell phones will operate at or what power base stations will have in 5G. For example, in 4G, cell phone power is set at 1 W, and in 3G, it is 2 W. However, in 5G, this value is expected to be 10 W and above. Similarly, while existing base stations operate at 50-100 W, 5G base stations are claimed to go up to 500 W. BTK has a detailed book on 5G, and research on domestic production of 5G continues in universities.”

World Health Organization acknowledged the harm of electromagnetic fields

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, stating that all electromagnetic radiations and electromagnetic fields are fundamentally considered radiation, continued:

“However, not all electromagnetic fields in our environment can be directly classified as radiation. Radiation must be emitted from a source; for example, base stations or electronic devices. The common view of scientists is that electromagnetic radiation and electromagnetic fields at all frequencies have biological effects. These effects are divided into thermal effects and non-thermal effects. Thermal effect can be explained as follows: when the human body's temperature increases by one degree, the thermal regulatory system activates, and harmful effects begin to occur in the biological structure. This is a medically proven condition and universally accepted knowledge. Electrical engineers set safety standards to prevent electromagnetic radiation from reaching this thermal threshold. There are some differences among applications. However, an important fact is that in 2001 and 2011, the World Health Organization officially recognized the biological harms of electromagnetic fields and included them in the risk group.”

The human body is also an electromagnetic system!

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker explained that the list of the biggest dangers facing the world at the World Economic Forum included the statement: “Electromagnetic radiation poses serious long-term threats to human health.” He added, “Cancers have increased. Previously, individuals with heart conditions at age 15 were almost non-existent, whereas today, the number of people experiencing serious health problems at a young age is rapidly increasing. One of the main reasons for this is changing environmental factors and the widespread use of electromagnetic fields. The human body is also an electromagnetic system. Just as devices affect each other, the human body is also affected by the electromagnetic waves around it. A branch of science called electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) has been developed to study this issue.”

Electromagnetic radiation causes genetic damage by breaking human DNA

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker noted that 12 different studies were conducted in 7 European countries, with a total expenditure of approximately 3 million Euros. He stated, “These studies revealed that electromagnetic radiation causes genetic damage by breaking human DNA. This report, prepared by experts from America, Russia, and European countries, states that electromagnetic fields impair human health, weaken the immune system, negatively affect sexual health, and create serious effects on the heart and brain.”

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker also mentioned that the report scanned and analyzed scientific publications worldwide, stating, “Research, especially on 5G technology, showed that electromagnetic radiation could be associated with cancer in the long term.”

Personal privacy is under threat with 5G!

Emphasizing the cybersecurity risks of 5G, Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker continued:

“Here is the anticipated great harm of 5G. First, with 5G technology, billions of devices will connect to the internet. All systems will become integrated. Thus, a person anywhere in the world, someone you don't know at all, can send you malicious messages or launch digital attacks. Because all devices will be interconnected. The issue of implanting chips in people may arise. Some people have already had chips implanted. If all people are connected through a single system, a central authority can control everyone's movements. 5G technology makes this possible. This is why personal privacy is under threat. Accessing bank accounts, seizing personal data, or cracking passwords could become easier. With the integration of security cameras, even the inside of homes could become monitorable. One person could easily track where another person lives or what they do. This points to a situation where privacy could completely disappear.”

What are the benefits of 5G technology?

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker stated that 5G technology also has benefits. He said, “Connection speed will increase incredibly, and capacity will be much wider. It will provide faster internet, better connections, and technological advancements. However, alongside these benefits, there are also significant security and privacy risks.”

5G requested to be halted until proven harmless to human health

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker stated that with 5G technology, privacy would cease to exist. He said, “With 5G, everything will be interconnected. Of course, security measures must also be taken against this. That's why 5G, which was planned to be implemented in 2020, was postponed to 2025. Why was it postponed? Because insufficient research had been done on the health effects of 5G. Currently, many scientists worldwide have called on the United Nations, demanding that 5G be halted until it is proven harmless to human health. Similarly, the European Union was also warned about this. During this process, Elon Musk also took a big step. He launches new satellites every day. Currently, there are 5-6 thousand satellites around the world. So, what is the purpose of these satellites? To strengthen communication infrastructure. Because these satellites move synchronously with the Earth's rotation, consuming minimum energy.”

We will be able to see satellites with the naked eye when we look at the sky

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker pointed out that there is also a claim that 5G could be used for intelligence and espionage purposes. He said, “On the other hand, Elon Musk has sent 5,000 satellites, but his goal is to reach 20,000 satellites. Moreover, there are three other big names like him, and each plans to launch 20,000 satellites. So, a total of 60,000 satellites will orbit the Earth. What will happen after that? We will be able to see these satellites with the naked eye when we look at the sky. Even NASA opposes this situation. However, companies are so powerful that they continue to implement their projects despite NASA's objections.”

A solution for high-speed internet without 5G exists: Fiber optic systems…

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker stated that since 5G uses millimeter wave, its frequency is very high, and therefore its range is quite limited. He said, “That's why satellite systems are being activated for 5G to work seamlessly everywhere. Existing base stations in Istanbul will be maintained, but a new satellite base station will be activated.”

Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker explained that as part of this system, base stations are even being placed on street lights in cities. He said, “This situation creates a colossal economic market. It is estimated that a business sector exceeding 10 trillion dollars will emerge in this area alone. That is why countries like Japan, China, and the USA are making huge investments and fiercely competing to seize leadership in this technology. Turkey is also investing to be part of this market and wants to evaluate the economic opportunities that 5G will bring. But is there an alternative to this technology? Yes, there is. A solution capable of providing high-speed internet without 5G exists: Fiber optic systems. Fiber optic technology was discovered years ago and is still one of the most reliable internet infrastructures. Thanks to fiber, seamless and high-speed connections can be provided in data transmission without channel limits.” He concluded his words.
