Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest on Bursa Technical University's Common Mind Society Instagram live broadcast. Prof. Dr. Tarhan made evaluations regarding the topic “New Truths in Youth”.
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made statements about the new truths young people acquire in the new and digital age and the effects of this situation on their lives. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “When we say new truths, the youth, whom we call Generation Z, are natives of the digital world; they were born into the digital world. Other generations learned it later, so we are novices in this regard. In this era of rapid digitalization and transformation, the gap between young people and other generations is widening more than in other times. Generational conflicts have existed for centuries, but they are experienced faster in this age.”
“The gap between generations is widening more than in other times”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that managing perception and understanding the processes related to perception well is crucial. Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “We are currently living in an age of speed, and in this age, we need to provide new answers to old questions. The truths are old truths, but those truths have been covered up or mislabeled, and our perceptions have changed. Perception is reality. The brain accepts what a person perceives as real. If one believes in a perception, that perception becomes real for them. Therefore, it is necessary to manage perception and understand the processes related to perception well. If we cannot, global systems manage us through cultural psychological warfare by changing our perceptions.
“Western civilization is currently experiencing a crisis”
Stating that people confuse the old and the new in this period where information quickly becomes outdated, Tarhan said, “We need to put truths and falsehoods back on the table and see which one is the real truth and which one is a truth altered by perceptions. For this reason, when we talk about new truths, we sometimes see that a person's truths change their clothing. Honesty, keeping one's word, not lying are the same truths, but they were pushed to the background in this era. Honesty had turned into being seen as foolish. The capitalist system viewed honesty, humility, helpfulness, faith, and religious values as a refuge for the weak. As a result, Western civilization is currently experiencing a crisis. That is why we need to re-examine our values and rebuild those that have been abandoned. Not bringing them exactly as they were in the past to the present.”
The key to success is ‘Dynamism’
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Those who are idealistic and have goals will stand out. If a young person starts a job with the mentality of ‘I'm closing the shop at five o'clock’, they cannot catch the excitement in that job. They cannot go to work with passion; they will be like a civil servant. There is no success where there is no dynamism. Those who do this will make a difference and will achieve the future. Therefore, a person with ideals will sweat and get tired. Those who have no ideals, who think only worldly, who are in secular philosophy, will exhaust themselves.”
“If young people grasp these truths, they will be successful and happy”
Underlining that the higher good of humanity should come first, Tarhan stated, “Modernism must renew itself. We need to rebuild our truths. If you notice, I say rebuild. We have broken values. It won't work if we simply replace old values with new ones. It's like dressing a person from a hundred years ago in today's clothes; it won't work. Therefore, we will preserve the essence and core, but we will adopt today's methods. The appearance of our values will change, but their essence will not. People need to learn and achieve the balance between these two. These are the new truths. If young people grasp these truths, they will be successful and happy. Both academic and life success will follow.”
