Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: "Tıbbiyeli Hikmet's speech changed the fate of the War of Independence"

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who attended the March 14 Medical Day program organized by Health Sciences University Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital, spoke about Tıbbiyeli Hikmet, who impressed everyone with his speech during the mandate discussions at the Sivas Congress and changed the fate of the War of Independence. Tarhan noted that the vast majority of those attending the Sivas Congress advocated for an American mandate, stating, “During a break in the meeting after a discussion, Tıbbiyeli Hikmet approached Mustafa Kemal and gave a speech vehemently opposing the mandate. Mazhar Müfit Kansu recounts in his memoirs that they explicitly stated they would reject Mustafa Kemal if he supported the mandate. Thereupon, Mustafa Kemal Pasha said that he was proud of the youth and trusted them, declaring, 'Either Independence or Death!' The medical students defended independence in that meeting where the vast majority desired a mandate. Tıbbiyeli Hikmet's sincere, heartfelt, and enthusiastic speech changed the fate of the War of Independence,' he said.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan attended the program organized by Health Sciences University Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital. The "March 14 Medical Day Ceremony" was celebrated in the online program. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made evaluations within the scope of "Leadership, Psychohistorical Perspective."

Celebrating March 14 is very valuable in a period of health wars

The ceremony, which began with the opening speech of Health Sciences University Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Fevzi Altuntaş, concluded with the speeches of Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan. Tarhan made evaluations on leadership and a psychohistorical perspective. Tarhan stated that March 14 gained even more importance during a period of health wars due to the pandemic, saying, “The importance of public health was better understood during this process. Some people had not realized the importance of the vaccine; healthcare professionals contributed to informing people during this period. Celebrating this day in such a period is quite important.”

Tıbbiyeli Hikmet's speech changed the fate of the War of Independence

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the importance of Tıbbiyeli Hikmet, who impressed everyone with his speech during the mandate discussions at the Sivas Congress. Tarhan said; “Those who visit the Congress Museum in Sivas know Tıbbiyeli Hikmet. The vast majority of those who attended the Sivas Congress advocated for an American mandate. During a break in the meeting after a discussion, Tıbbiyeli Hikmet approached Mustafa Kemal and gave a speech vehemently opposing the mandate. Tıbbiyeli Hikmet's sincere, heartfelt, and enthusiastic speech changed the fate of the War of Independence. Perhaps a mandate decision could have emerged from there. In this sense, leadership in wars is very important,' he stated.

No one is born a leader, leadership is learned later

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that he wanted to bring a different perspective to the concept of psychohistory on the occasion of March 14. Tarhan said, “The psychological dimension of leadership is quite important. Managing the emotion of fear in war is a very vital situation; if it cannot be managed, it can lead to the loss of the war. No matter how strong the opposing side is in war, we can win the war by using psychological warfare and embargo methods. Managing the 'emotion of fear' is very important when governing a country. In the relationship between fear and the rule of law, if people believe in the rule of law, there will be no fear. Leadership means using the frontal lobe of the human brain. This is something learned; no one is born a leader. If a leader inspires trust, people will follow,' he stated.

If a person manages their brain well, they become a successful leader

Referring to types of intelligence in leadership, Prof. Dr. Tarhan emphasized five different types of intelligence. Tarhan said; “These types of intelligence are: logical intelligence, emotional intelligence, bodily intelligence, conscientious intelligence, and social intelligence. It is important to manage all of these correctly. True leadership is neuro-leadership. If a person manages their brain well, they become a good leader. There are three types of leadership: Classical leadership, charismatic leadership, scientific leadership. The true leader is within the team, making decisions together with team members. Hitler convinced his people that they were an Aryan race using propaganda techniques. Ultimately, the wars ended unfavorably for him. Narcissistic leaders like Mussolini and Hitler demonstrated the importance of democracy to Europe. Paranoid leaders classify everyone as internal and external enemies. However, this ultimately backfires; it is necessary not to divide society into friends and enemies. The personalities of leaders are very important,' he stated.

Every person is their own leader

Classifying leaders according to their idea generation types, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, said, "Classical leaders have absolute truths. Charismatic leaders influence and manage society through PR. In the case of a scientific leader, civilian intellect and military intellect are separated. Such leaders generate ideas without making it obvious, they don't waste it, but give it to those who will buy the idea. On March 14 Medical Day, I wanted to address the importance of leadership in terms of history, psychology, and the lessons we can draw. Every person is their own leader. It is necessary to use the five types of intelligence – logical intelligence, emotional intelligence, bodily intelligence, conscientious intelligence, and social intelligence – together,' he concluded.
