Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: The Mental Health of Pitbull Owners Should Be Examined

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that individuals who own Pitbulls are not bothered by such attacks, do not feel guilty, and their mental health should be examined. Tarhan said, “There should be a license that permits people to own Pitbulls.”

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan suggested a psychological examination of Pitbull owners. Tarhan stated, “Walking a Pitbull without a muzzle is not something healthy people would do.” Referring to recent Pitbull attacks, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan used the expressions, 'Releasing this breed into nature is a threat. If you were to release it into nature, a genetically engineered monster dog created by human hands would roam freely.'

Anti-social, Ruthless, Empathy-Lacking Individuals Own Them

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who also suggested a psychological examination of those who own Pitbull-type dogs, said, 'Especially in individuals who walk Pitbulls in the streets without a protective muzzle, the impulse for aggression is at high levels. Personality disorders can be found in these individuals. Walking a Pitbull without a muzzle is not something healthy people would do. People who want to scare others with a Pitbull are generally anti-social, ruthless, and lack empathy. From a social perspective, the thought ‘the dog is loyal to me’ satisfies them. These types of Pitbull owners are individuals who are not bothered by such attacks and do not feel guilty. Their mental health should be examined. Just as a driver's license is issued for driving a car, a license should be issued allowing Pitbull owners to own a Pitbull.'”
