Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, participated in the Interactive Psychiatry Education Congress (IPEK) organized by the Psychiatry Academy. Many expert names in their field came together at the congress. Tarhan delivered a presentation titled “Neuroscience-Based Psychotherapies” within the scope of the congress. Noting that artificial intelligence and neurotechnology are widely used in the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases, and results regarding the effectiveness of these treatments are increasing in the literature, Tarhan stated that the era of digital medicines in healthcare has begun.

Many experts in their field gathered at the congress held at Kıbrıs Concorde Luxury Hotel.

"Neuroscience-Based Psychotherapies" presentation drew attention

Speaking at the panel titled "Interesting Topics in Psychiatry," Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Tarhan, delivered a presentation on "Neuroscience-Based Psychotherapies." Stating that AI-powered treatment methods are promising in neuropsychiatric diseases, Tarhan drew attention to the brain's functional connectivity networks.

Providing information on sensorimotor networks and cognitive networks, Tarhan said; "Sensorimotor networks encompass visual networks, auditory networks, and somatosensory networks. Cognitive networks include the default mode network, salience network, executive control network, dorsal attention network, and ventral attention network."

He spoke about the brain's memory formation process…

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, speaking about the brain's memory formation process, said; "When a neuron receives a sufficiently strong stimulus, it sends an electrical signal to one of its neighboring neurons. A temporary connection forms between these two cells. With repeated signals, the connection strengthens, and a network is formed. This network corresponds to a single memory."

CBT and Depression Relationship

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also touched upon the relationship between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and depression. Tarhan stated; "It has been found that amygdala-hippocampal activity is associated with depression, and dorsal anterior cingulate activity is an indicator of a positive treatment process following CBT. This activity can be used to predict the extent to which individuals can benefit from CBT."

He also stated that interpersonal psychotherapy is based on Sullivan's theory and aims to improve interpersonal relationships in the treatment of depression. Tarhan also addressed neurobiofeedback, providing information on Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta waves.

Current developments in psychiatry discussed at the congress

The Interactive Psychiatry Education congress was organized to share current developments in the field of psychiatry, increase information exchange among experts, and bring innovative perspectives to clinical practices. The congress was of great importance in terms of encouraging multidisciplinary approaches.

Various therapy methods were discussed

Within the scope of the event, therapy methods such as "Psychoanalytic-Oriented Psychotherapy," "Schema Therapy," "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy," and "Metacognitive Therapy" were discussed in detail.

The era of digital medicines (DTx) in healthcare is beginning…

Prof. Dr. Tarhan drew attention to the effectiveness and increasing prevalence of Digital Therapeutics (DTx), a new generation treatment method that uses digital technologies to manage patients' health conditions and improve treatment processes, stating that DTx, which aligns with personalized medicine principles, typically provides personalized monitoring, education, treatment, and rehabilitation services through mobile applications, virtual platforms, or wearable devices, offering customized treatment plans by considering patients' genetic, biomarker, and lifestyle data.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also explained that this enables more accurate and faster data to be obtained regarding individuals' diseases, treatment processes to be optimized according to the person, and health outcomes to be improved, and finally, he shared that this field holds significant potential in many areas such as the management of chronic diseases, mental health disorders, and postoperative recovery.
