Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “It's not about advising, but about walking together”
Later, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan met with Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin and visited the Gaziantep Family Academy. Tarhan, who had previously been present at its opening, discussed Gaziantep's suicide prevention action plan at the meeting held at the Family Academy. Underlining the need for the municipality's work to be structured into projects, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan mentioned that almost half of those who commit suicide are hopeless and pessimistic individuals. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that people who understand empathy should be involved in such a valuable project, stating that in suicide cases, it is important not to advise individuals, but to take them by the hand and walk alongside them.
“Gaziantep will be a serious pioneer in this regard”
Tarhan, expressing his ideas within the scope of the 'Connect to Life' project to be launched by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality and stating that cooperation is possible in the project; “I see the Family Academy as a project that has put the issue of family into practice. It currently has various functions. One assesses a person's psychological disorders, provides family counseling, spiritual counseling, and legal counseling. While doing all this, there is serious teamwork involved. The Family Academy has started this and made it sustainable. It is a serious example of social municipality, a center working on family issues. It also forms an important pillar regarding suicide. The second related work program on this issue is the suicide prevention and assistance project. In such situations, it is necessary to identify individuals in need and reach out to them individually. There is a suicide epidemic all over the world. Gaziantep will be a serious pioneer in this regard with this center and its activities, and if so, it will also be a pioneer in Turkey. It seems to be a project that will be a reference globally and enter the literature. I believe this sensitivity will find its reward,” he said.
