Outstanding Achievement and Honor Award in Social Consciousness and Psychiatry: Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan left his mark on the night with the “Academician Most Exemplary to Society and Most Beneficial to His Homeland” award, drawing attention to autism awareness in his speech. Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated the following:

Autism has an unstoppable rise in the world…

Expressing his gratitude for the award presentation, Tarhan said, “It is very valuable that importance is given to autism awareness. Currently, there is an unstoppable rise of autism in the world. It is known as a neurodevelopmental disorder. New methods have been developed in the diagnosis of autism. It has been understood that some genes in their brains do not function well, and there are serious studies on gene therapies for those genes. As a university, we have started important studies in this field in Turkey, particularly in neurogenetic studies."

There is learned autism…

Stating that they have great hopes for related treatments with the increase in autism, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, "Perhaps in the next ten years, great lights will shine in treatments related to the increase in autism; we expect great news. We are hopeful. In autism, we also observe this: there is learned autism. Apart from congenital genetic autism, in some people who are overly exposed to computers and social media, very serious autistic findings, which we call atypical autism, emerge. They are very intelligent, they have islands of genius in their brains, but they cannot manage social contact. They cannot succeed in social relationships. Such autistic cases are increasing. This is a global problem, and in this situation, studies related to awareness are very valuable.”
