Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Morality is Not Innate, It is Learned Later”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was a guest on Kağıthane District Directorate of National Education’s Instagram live broadcast. Expressing his views under the title “Academic Success in Child Education? Or Life Success?”, Tarhan said; “Values are precious to us and must be passed on to new generations. Otherwise, there will be a great global loss. Social media has become the grandfather of society and the home. We are losing our moral values here too. It is necessary to teach moral success to young people. Morality is not innate, it is learned later.”

“Wisdom Education Should Be Provided in Our Education System”

Stating that the 21st century is the age of wisdom and that education should keep pace with this era, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “Intelligent, hardworking, and moral individuals need to be raised. I would like to state that not everything is academic education. Merit, importance, and business ethics need to be emphasized. In the age of wisdom, wisdom should be taught before values education. We observe that families cannot teach this. In this case, our education system's effort is required. There are individuals who need to be raised without solely focusing on success. If we set a good example for young people, I am hopeful that they will become individuals suitable for society. Wisdom education should be provided in our education system.”

“Values are Precious to Us and Must Be Passed on to New Generations”

Stating that the family is the primary school of morality, Tarhan said; “Let’s define and know our values and criteria of rectitude. Honesty, which should be inherent in everyone, has now become a virtue. I believe that honesty is decreasing in our country. Our values are precious to us; we need to protect them. Unless taught, the new generation is deprived of cultural transfer. Otherwise, there will be a great global loss. Social media has become the grandfather of society and the home. We are losing our moral values here too. It is also necessary to teach moral success to young people. Morality is not innate, it is learned later.”

“Our Aim is Not to Raise Uniform Individuals”

Stating, “If people express their ideas freely, they will find the truth,” Tarhan continued by noting that as a university, they are open to free thoughts and different ideas: “I see that our education system imposes absolute truths, which is not correct. It is necessary to question, express one's opinion, and share. There is no ideological system in other countries. Truth is found through discussion. As a university, we attach importance to liberal, participatory, pluralistic, and critical thinking with accountable perspectives. Our goal is not to raise uniform individuals. People need to be taught global peace. There can be no peace where there is violence. Democracy is a value. We need to attach importance to justice and truths. The state will be independent of all religions and ideas. There is no liberal and secular thought in Turkey, and there should be.”
